28th August 2002 From:
Long Pond Stream Lean-to The trail today was not difficult and the climbs and descents were reasonable. However, one couldn't hike with any speed, as there were roots and rocks to negotiate all day. In addition, there were quite a few unexpected bolder scrambles. We are all tired of this and are looking forward to the day after tomorrow when the trail flattens out and the foot bed is fast and smooth. We all believe we have done the hand yards and have earned an easy cruise to Katahdin. Tomorrow will probably be a 13-mile day as the map profile shows an all day climb to 3700 feet, crossing a number of mountain peaks culminating with White Cap. It's very pleasant camped by the river here. 'Lotto' is here with me, as is another Northbound couple. Well, that's it for today. Goodnight all.
