The day didn't start off too well - the alarm failed to go off and I didn't wake until 6:20 A.M. To make things worse, it had been raining heavily overnight and the tent was soaked. Nothing like packing up a wet tent! Oh well, it was Monday after all, and after an easy weekend, I have a tough week ahead in the AT office. Two projects to complete this week: (1) Scale Mt. Washington, and (2) Get through to Gorham, thus completing the White Mountains section of the AT. At least it had stopped raining, so I packed up and headed off the 3/4 mile back to the AT (I just love it when the shelter areas are so far from the trail!).

At 10:30 A.M. I reached the AMC Zealand Falls Hut. I unpacked my tent and spread it out in the sun to dry, then into the hut. Seventy-five cents buys me a hot chocolate, and $1.00 buys all-you-can-eat cake. I guess I must have eaten seven or eight pieces of sticky chocolate cake. With that, I felt supercharged and headed off again.

For the next five or six miles the trail was relatively flat and clear of obstructions; this was most unexpected. Around 3:00 P.M., I reached the car park at Crawford Notch. My plan was to get some water from the river, duck across the highway, and stealth camp. I felt I'd hiked enough today and my lower legs were feeling very tired. However, in the car park I find a trail angel, 'The Old Phart'. He was sitting in a sun chair entertaining a young Southbounder. At his invitation I sat down and joined them. I had a cold beer and two packets of cream cakes; it must be cake day! These two suggested I hike a little further and go on up the next hill and camp on Webster Cliffs, which would we a 2000 feet climb for me.

Again, after the refreshments, I felt supercharged. I cross the highway and went down to the river and filled my water containers. With that I effortlessly climbed the hill and found the most wonderful camping site nestled amongst some small pines just back from the cliffs. I just hope a thunderstorm doesn't come through.

Well, it's been another tough day at the office, so I'll say goodnight all.
