6th August 2002 From:
Webster Cliffs For the first time in a long while, I started hiking with my fleece top on. I hiked through to the Mizpah Hut, where I had cake and hot chocolate. 'Haze' was there also and we discussed where we were planning to go to today. We were both going to head for the Lake of the Clouds Hut. I wanted to stay in the dungeon where they have a small number of bunks at $8.00 per night for thru-hikers only. 'Haze' was going to work-for-stay. It was freezing on the way up to Mizpah Hut and it worsened upon leaving. I was hiking in open areas and the wind must have been up near 50 MPH. At times it was hard to stand without being blown over. It started raining and the rain was freezing and felt like needles on my skin. I'm surprised I didn't get hypothermia. The good thing was that the trail was relatively easy (compared to recent days). I finally reached the hut and immediately changed into dry clothes. My feet were still freezing, so after a bowl of mushroom soup I got into my sleeping bag. After warming up I got up and cooked a Lipton's Dinner. I then went up to the main hut where both 'Haze' and 'Blaze' had arrived - both near hypothermic. I won't be staying up here long as it's colder than the dungeon and my feet are freezing again. It's hard to believe but two days ago I was getting sunburned - today, it's freezing. That's it for today. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight all.
