13th July 2002

From:  Pine Swamp Brook Shelter
To: Brassie Brook Lean-to
State
: Connecticut (CT)
Miles: ?  1485.5 (1030.5)
Miles today:  21.0

I forgot to mention an important milestone I reached yesterday: I passed the 1450-mile mark, so that makes it 1000 miles since I started in Damascus on 30th of April.

I ended up doing quite a few more miles today than I intended. As all of the weekend hikers are out, the shelter before this one had a lot of teenagers there and I felt like it might be a noisy night so I moved on. So far, there's only a weekend hiker, 'Ralph' from New Haven and myself here. I need a good sleep tonight as last night around 10:30 P.M., 'Bliss' and 'Tiger Lily' arrived at the shelter just as I had gotten to sleep. So after they woke me I had difficulty getting back to sleep.

It was a beautiful sunny morning, just right for hiking. Around 9:30 A.M. I came to US 7 and ducked 200 yards up the road to the coffee shop. I spotted 'Henry D' coming up across the railway bridge and he followed me to the coffee shop. I had the largest cup of hot chocolate you could imagine (future photo to come) and three enormous blueberry pancakes. I had difficulty in finishing them.

Back on the trail and as I was crossing a road, I saw a magnificent grey fox. He was just standing on the other side of the road from me. He stood there quite a while before ducking into the brush. Ten miles later on as I was walking through a grassy patch just before Salisbury, around a bend in the trail, and walking towards me, was a bobcat. Just like the fox, he had a good look at me, then casually ducked into the scrub.

I had a nice feed of raspberries on the trail this afternoon. Hiking poles are ideal to help separate those thorny bushes to rind the ripe fruit. The trail is covered with blueberry bushes laden with fruit. However, I think it will be another few weeks before I can have a feast.

That's all for today folks, goodnight all.
