14th July 2002

From:  Brassie Brook Lean-to
To: Campsite
State
: Massachusetts
Miles: ?  1503.0 (1048)
Miles today:  17.5

It was a very hot day today and the trail put a few steep, long climbs and descents for me to tackle. As a result, my progress was a lot slower than normal. By lunchtime (12:30 P.M.), I had only covered nine miles whereas I would normally have done 12.

I ran out of water at 11:30 A.M. and was relying on the brook at the upcoming Hemlocks Lean-to to quench my thirst and refill my water bottles. However, disappointment awaited me, as the stream was bone dry. Four teenagers were at the shelter; they had been partying all night. Fortunately, they did have cold beer, which they offered me, so I had a cold Corona with my lunch, and then got on my way.

As the mosquitoes were all over me for much of the day, I decided sometimes after 4:30 P.M. that as soon as I came to an area that had few Mozzies I would stop and cook dinner. In ended up alongside US 7, next to an AT sign, in a nice shady spot, cook and ate quickly, then got on my way again. I forgot to mention - I refilled all my water bottles from a roadside spring some 3 1/2 miles on from where I had lunch.

I continued on for about one mile after dinner where I found a nice, flat leafy area on a small knoll, which would be ideal to set up camp. After setting up my tent I noticed that I had a deer tick burrowed in my forearm. I couldn't remove it with tweezers, so I burnt it off with my cigarette lighter. I was then able to remove the head with the tweezers. Now I have to wait it out to see if I contract Lyme Disease. Two hikers that I know, 'Stumpknocker' and 'Jolly Roger', have already contracted this debilitating disease.

Whoops, nearly forgot to mention that I crossed into Massachusetts today - one more state covered - four to go!

That's all for today folks, goodnight all.
