18th July 2002 From:
Dalton My friend, Steve Webber, offered to drive me around to do a few chores, so I got him to drive me to the outfitters at Williamston as I needed to buy new socks. The socks I bought a week ago are too thin and are not giving me enough cushioning, so I purchased two pair of heavy duty hiking socks and put the others in my bounce box. On the drive to Williamstown I got a good look at Mt. Greylock and got a preview of the climb and scenery that awaits me tomorrow. It was much cooler in Williamstown than Dalton, which is an indicator that we can look forward to cooler hiking as we move northward over the next few weeks. It certainly is beautiful country in that area and I look forward to it. Back down to Pittsfield for a haircut, my shortest yet - it looks a little scary to say the least. We then had lunch at 99 Restaurant, then goodbye to Steve. Back to the trail again tomorrow, which I'm looking forward to. Goodnight all.
