20th July 2002 From:
Wilbur Clearing Lean-to It's 8:10 A.M. so I put in a quick call to Faye at home (10:10 P.M. in Melbourne) and she's just getting ready for bed. All's well at home on this Friday night (Australian time). Inside the store I bought a few extra food supplies for the trial, then a large hot chocolate, two fresh donuts, and an iced coffee scroll. I sat down on the bench outside and polished them off. Back to the trail and two miles further on, I cross the border between MA and Vermont (VT) - only three states to go! The AT in Vermont is only 149 miles. For the first 97 of these, the AT shares the path with "The Long Trail." The Long Trail starts here and ends at the Canadian border some 290 odd miles north. Quite a few steep climbs today, however, I have noticed the trail has moved away from populated areas and for the first time in about six weeks I'm back in the wilderness again. Also, the water situation has improved. There appears to be many more streams with good flows. A southbounder I met yesterday told me I won't have any problems getting water in the last three northern states (VT, NY, and ME). That's it for today folks. Goodnight all.
