26th July 2002 From:
Governor Clement Shelter I didn't intend to stay here but I came off the AT on US4 at 12:30 P.M. and my guidebook mentioned good food at the Pub, so I stuck out my thumb and had a ride in just a few minutes. I ordered potato skins with cheese followed by a cheese sandwich. That was okay, but it was the two large glasses of Guinness that was my undoing, for as I left the Pub and put my backpack on I realized that I was in no state to negotiate rocks and roots, so I booked a room at the Inn for the night. Only one other thru-hiker is staying here, 'Chupa' from Illinois. One real long climb today up Mt. Killington, then a slow long downhill descent to the highway. One mile up the trail tomorrow and that's where the Long Trail and the AT separate. The Long Trail goes directly North to the Canadian border and the AT swings eastward to New Hampshire. The first town in New Hampshire is Hanover, which is 45 miles or just over two days hiking from here. If my memory serves me correctly, Hanover is where Bill Bryson used to live when he lived in the USA. Hanover is a university town and has a lot of low cost restaurants plus a Ben and Jerry's store! (TKH - of course!) I may spend a zero day in Hanover - I'll decide that when I get there. My boots are doing well but the tread is starting to disappear so I have arranged for Rockfish Gap Outfitters to ship a new pair of the same make, model, and size to me at Gorham, NH. That'll mean that the boots have lasted 1100 miles, which isn't too bad considering they had to weather the Pennsylvania rocks. I've had dinner and a Guinness in the Pub and the band is setting up now, so I think I'll order another Guinness and listen to the music for half an hour then head off to bed. According to my calculations, I have 482 miles to go to complete my AT hike at Mount Katahdin, ME. All I need to do is remain focused so that I don't get an injury and I should complete the AT in early September. That's it for tonight folks, goodnight all.
