27th July 2002 From:
US4 Lots of mountains to climb today - it was one of those days where the trail always seemed to go up. It was tough going all day. Fortunately, it was cool most of the day with the sun only breaking through occasionally. I meant to mention earlier for the folks back home that in Vermont the AT passes through many ski resorts, all closed for the summer, of course. I only saw two other Northbounders today, 'Chupa' and one other whose trailname I didn't catch. I also saw about five Southbounders. When I arrived at the shelter there was no one else here so I pitched the inner of my tent in the shelter. Although the number of Mozzies is reducing, they are still around and pounce on you whenever you stop. Someone made an entry in a shelter register asking, "Where have all the Northbounders gone?" That's certainly a question that's been on my mind for although there are many entries in shelter registers from people I know, a lot of names of people met earlier on the trail are missing. I suspect a lot of those missing are young people who have run out of money and have had to leave the trail. Certainly over the last month I heard lots of stories of people nearly out of money. That's it for now, goodnight all.
