28th July 2002

From:  Wintturi Shelter
To: Happy Hill Shelter
State
: Vermont
Miles: ? 1721.1 (1266.1)
Miles today:  20.2

The trail was a real roller coaster today: climb a hill - go down the other side. This went on continuously all day with few ridge walks or flat sections. The only saving grace was that the trail condition was very good - no rocks and few roots. At the end of the day my clothes were soaked, as the humidity was very high. The clouds didn't lift all day and visibility was about two miles.

Around 4:00 P.M. I came into the small town of West Hartford on the White River. 'The Lone Ranger' was sitting on the bench outside the food store and deli. I went into the store and bought one of their famous milkshakes plus a Submarine sandwich for dinner later on.

'Cowboy' came wandering along - it seems he has been in town since yesterday (Saturday) and has to stay here until Monday morning to get his mail drop from the post office. He was camped behind someone's house and wanted 'The Lone Ranger' and myself to stay overnight with him. 'The Lone Ranger' stayed but I declined, as I wanted to reach the next shelter, four miles further on.

As I was leaving town a lady doing her gardening started talking with me and mention that Aussie Robbie McEwen had won the previous stage of the Tour De France. As I started to move on, her husband arrived and asked if I wanted an apple. With that, he dashed inside and came out with an apple and a banana for me….a little unexpected "town" magic.

The trail to the shelter was four miles - all up hill! About half way up, a trail angel had left some cokes in a stream, so I grabbed one and continued on.

When I reached the shelter, 'Chupa' and a Southbounder were there. I set up my tent and started to clean up - about this time, I decided I didn't feel too well. I was feverish, shivering, and had an aching back. The first thing I though of was Lyme Disease. I took two Panadol and got into my tent. A trip to the doctor might be required tomorrow.

That's it for now, goodnight all.
