30th July 2002 From:
Hanover, NH For me, the day was a lot harder than it needed to be. Somehow, that I haven't yet understood, sometime mid-morning, I turned around on the trail and was hiking SOUTH! It wasn't until I met another hiker that my error was exposed. At that time I was within one mile of Hanover, yet I left Hanover two and a half hours earlier. So in effect, I had hiked two hours for no gain! Boy was I demoralized; it really spoilt my day. The worse thing is when I retraced my steps I have no idea where or how I managed to do a 180 degree turn around. I've also picked up some very painful heat rashes near my groin, so I'm not a very happy camper tonight. I'll be happy to go to sleep and put this day behind me. Goodnight all.
