There are seven hikers at the shelter tonight and all of the Northbounders agree it was a tough day today. There were some long steep climbs; couple that with a 90-degree temperature and it has to be tough. Steep climbs tomorrow; the forecast I've not heard broadcast as yet.

For me, the day was a lot harder than it needed to be. Somehow, that I haven't yet understood, sometime mid-morning, I turned around on the trail and was hiking SOUTH! It wasn't until I met another hiker that my error was exposed. At that time I was within one mile of Hanover, yet I left Hanover two and a half hours earlier. So in effect, I had hiked two hours for no gain! Boy was I demoralized; it really spoilt my day. The worse thing is when I retraced my steps I have no idea where or how I managed to do a 180 degree turn around.

I've also picked up some very painful heat rashes near my groin, so I'm not a very happy camper tonight. I'll be happy to go to sleep and put this day behind me.

Goodnight all.
