4th July 2002 From:
NJ 94 (Vernan) Last night I went for pizza at the Italian Restaurant and had some "town magic" - a stranger paid for my dinner. Apparently he had seen me volunteer to give my table up for a family who needed seats for six. I offered them my table so they could joint it to another. This other patron was apparently looking on and wanted to reward my good deed. I was a little embarrassed by it but thankful just the same. The weather forecast for the next three days is for temps in the low 80s and low humidity; great from hiking. I just had a bad experience at Dunkin Donuts. I was going to the diner for lunch but they were closed so I went to Dunkin Donuts. I ordered four donuts and a drink. After eating three donuts, I picked up the last one and there was a bug underneath. I felt just great, as you can imagine! I took it back to the counter where they didn't know what to do. I asked for a refund of the whole meal, some $7.00 odd. They only offered to refund for the "bug" donut even after phoning the supervisor. I told a few of the customers who were waiting and threatened to stand outside and tell everyone coming in - they said they would call the cops. I was going to put a sign on their drink-in menu but decided my actions might be associated with hikers and the hostel, so I decided against it. In the end, I lodged a complaint at ecomplaint.com. It will be interesting to see if I get a response. The Dunkin Donuts website doesn't even allow visitors to submit e-mail messages. Maybe they were getting too many complaints! Steve, the Vicar, dropped around and had a chat with us. He is really a nice guy. Yesterday I mailed my Polartec jacket on to Hanover, MA. That's reduced my pack weight by one pound. Hanover is just before the White Mountains so it should work out well. Staying at the hostel tonight are: 'Doc' and 'Wounded Knee', 'Big Lebowski', 'Heavy D', and 'Windbreaker'. We thought a few more would arrive but it hasn't turned out that way. I'm looking forward to hitting the trail tomorrow. That's all for now from Vernon, NJ, so I'll say goodnight all.
