8th July 2002 From:
Hemlock Springs Camp More trail magic again today. It was around 11:00 A.M. and I had just crossed a small road - there was a large container of fresh water and an iced-filled cooler with two cans of iced tea. I had one and three minutes later 'Windbreaker' came along and had the last. This is a trend that I hope doesn't stop. The Thru-Hiker's Handbook listed a lake and campground one mile off the trail. It was a long walk, but I had gone far enough on this hot day and the shower was like a magnet pulling me onwards. It was about 4:30 P.M. when I checked in at the Ranger Station to find out that all of the drink vending machines in the park were "out of order" as they were being converted from Pepsi to Coke. The Ranger saw my disappointment and said: "We have sodas in our fridge, if you want one." They had a stack of cans left over from their July 4th party and he said to take as many as I wanted. So, very thankfully, I took four. The first one didn't even touch the sides as it went down. So I've killed the mossie, had a shower, and rinsed a few clothes out. I've got quite a few blood spots on the tent from dead mossies so it will need a wash when I get home. There's a southbound section hiker here named 'Steve' who spent two years as a barman on an adventure cruise ship. It's a small world, as 'Steve' was in Melbourne, Hobart, and Sydney last month. He's a nice guy and we had a chat about all sorts of things. He's now going to St. Louis to settle and buy his first home. He's been using his two months AT-section-hike to do a little forward planning. That's all for now, goodnight all.
