9th July 2002 From:
NY301 There's only one other person here, Bob Hilt from Albany, NY, who is doing a short section hike. Seeing that there were only two of us here, I decided to see if I could set my tent up in the shelter. A cord tied at each end and attached to a large rock did the trick. It was hot and humid today. Fortunately, the trail was very good; quite a few ups and downs but nothing too difficult. By noon, I had done 12 miles and reached NY 52 where a Deli was located 1/2 mile down the road. 'Windbreaker' was there with me, so off we went. I had a Submarine sandwich, a cold beer, and a pint of Ben and Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream. I also bought an additional sandwich to take away for dinner tonight. We sat out front in the shade and a local guy who owns a landscaping business joined us and we had a great chat and a few laughs; a little while later 'Woodstock' arrived by car and joined us at our table. Apparently she had stabbed her ankle with her hiking pole, so she jumped off the trail at the next road and started hitching. They all left after a while but I sat there until about 2:30 to avoid hiking in the heat. It was only four miles to the next shelter so my plan was to cruise there slowly and conserve my body fluids and energy. It's now 7:30 P.M. and it's still raining - steadily, not heavily. Hopefully this will continue through the night. One of my socks has a hole in the heel. Fortunately, the Guide Book tells me that there is an outfitter in Kent, Connecticut (CT). I should be there in two or three days. That's all for today, goodnight all.
