From: Pen-Mar County Park
To: Quarry Gap Shelter
State: Maryland
Miles

Miles today: 20.7 miles

After I had my dinner last night, I left the park and went down the trail 1/2 mile. I found a small tent site near a stream. I must have been really been tired as I slept through my alarm and woke at 8:00 A.M.

I didn't see any other thru-hikers in the morning, however, the number of shelters I came across in such a short distance staggered me (four shelters in ten miles, and two of them were double shelters no less). They must get a lot of hikers around here.

I stopped to fill my water at a park adjacent to the AT and found a trail angel had left two oranges on the tap - they were juicy sweet. Thanks, trail angel.

Early afternoon, as I was negotiating a stretch of boulders, I heard 'True' and her dog come up behind me. Apparently her mother had had a heart attack and was in the hospital. She was heading for Caledonia State Park, where her sister was going to pick her up and drive her to Connecticut. She's not sure when she will get back to the trail.

We got to the park around 3:00 P.M. I headed to the store and bought a coke and ice cream sandwich. I also took a shower and rinsed a few clothes. Quite a few hikers wandered in and joined us at the picnic tables in the shade under the trees. I cooked dinner, said farewell to 'True', and hiked leisurely to the next shelter. I've set up the tent on a little grassy spot just outside the shelter.

One thing I should mention, is that yesterday, 'Three Day', 'Piper', and 'True' met an old guy at Pen-Mar Park who wanted some thru-hikers to talk to a Rotary lunch the next day, so he takes them home and puts them up for the night. He gave them a three-course meal, pizzas, and ice cream. Breakfast was eggs and pastries. After letting them hike for a few hours this morning, he picked them up and took them to the Rotary lunch, then drops them back at the trail. What a story these guys have to tell!

That's it for now, goodnight all.
