21st June 2002 From:
Campsite It was only short hike down to Lehigh Gap where I hitched a lift straight away. As mentioned in Bill Bryson's book, this area is pretty much denuded of trees and undergrowth due to the zinc mining, so it looks a little stark in contrast to the forests I've been travelling through. I got dropped at the post office in Palmerton, which is only about a mile from the trail. I picked up the food Faye had sent me and my bounce box, then mailed my bounce box forward to Dalton, Massachusetts. I check in to the town hall where they let hikers stay in the basement, which is set up like a bunkroom. There are also showers and toilets available for our use. I was given a Hiker Show Bag courtesy of the local girl scouts. It contained soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, granola bar, and a small first aid kit. What a surprise and what a nice thought. I had lunch and dinner at Subway - low cost and low fat nourishment. I've decided to have a zero day tomorrow and leave early A.M. on Monday. The library is right in the center of town, so I got on-line and checked my journal at Trailjournals.com and my website; both look terrific. Thanks again Relic and The Keyboard Hiker, as I know how much work is involved in entering and formatting all of this information. Palmerton is a town of around 5,000 and is typical small town USA. That is, it's based around one main street with strip shops and offices over about a 3/4-mile length. The only disappointment I have is that they don't have a one-hour photo service. I have been carrying a used disposable camera for over two weeks and want to get the film processed. That's it for now, goodnight all.
