24th June 2002

From: Campsite
To: Delaware Water Gap
State: Pennsylvania
Miles
:
? 1288.5 (833.5)
Miles today: 14.6 miles

Got an early start again today. The first five miles of the trail was continuous rocks. It was very hard on my feet and lower legs. Now my right shin is aching again - that's all I need.

The good news is that I am now almost in New Jersey and understand that the rocks will slowly thin out in the next three days and the trail surface will return to normal. All of the northbound hikers have taken a beating with the Pennsylvania rocks and will be glad to be rid of them.

Delaware Water Gap (DWG) (bottom left on map) is a small town of probably 500 or less. The main street winds down a hill and is tree lined. There are a number of cafes and a diner, plus a pizza shop here, however, no supermarkets for those who need it.

I got in at 1:00 P.M. and checked into the free Church of the Mountain Hostel - lots of room here - two bunkrooms, shower, toilet, and hiker's lounge. It's very comfortable.

It became so hot in the bunkroom, I moved out and set up my tent on the lawn out back with half a dozen others. There are about 15 people staying here in all.

For dinner, a few of us went down to the pizza joint. I had a pizza and a cold beer, and then bought a pint of Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia, my favorite ice cream.

That's it for now folks; another hot day coming up tomorrow.

Goodnight all.
