7th June 2002

From: Bear's Den Hostel
To: Harper's Ferry
State: Virginia
Miles

? 1004.9 (549.9)
Miles today: 20.8 miles

I forgot to explain a little about Bear's Den hostel yesterday. The hostel is located 20 miles south of Harper's Ferry. It is in the mountains just 200 yards off the AT and is owned and operated by the Appalachian Trail Conference. I thought I should clear that up as some readers may think it's in a town.

'Real' and I got up at 5:00 A.M. this morning and were on the trail by 5:30 A.M. We had to conquer the last three hills of the "Roller Coaster," then it would be easy cruising into Harper's Ferry.

About an hour after we started, we had to cross a freeway. It was 6:30 A.M. and there were lots of cars heading east. We figured they were commuting to Washington, D.C., which was about 50 miles away. I expect when they saw us, they either thought: "Why don't you get a job?" or "You lucky so and so's, I wish I could be out there with you."

It was a good day's hiking as the weather was cool and the trail fairly smooth, except for a rocky stretch about three miles before Harper's Ferry. Coming down through the hills into Harper's Ferry gave us some great views of the Shenandoah River, which was about 100 yards wide. There were a number of canoeists working their way through the rapids, having a great time of it.

We made our way to the ATC (Appalachian Trail Conference) Headquarters where they took our photos and made us welcome. We had decided to stay in the KOA Campground (Caravan Park) about 1 1/2 miles out of town. There was a hostel about three miles from town but I decided it was too far away.

While we were at the ATC, 'True', a female hiker we had met some time ago, came by with her sister who had come up from New York City for the week to hike with her. They were walking to the campground and would pick up their van and come drive us back.

As it was around 4:30 P.M., we wandered down the road to the Pizza Restaurant to get some food. We ordered food and were chatting to 'Bassman', who was there also. The girls came searching for us and found us there. After we had eaten, we drove about four miles out of town to The Food Lion Supermarket. We all stocked up with enough food for the next section. So, for me, tomorrow is a "zero" day and I'll have a leisurely look around Harper's Ferry, which is stepped in Civil War history. I also need to get a haircut, as my hair is annoying me when I perspire on humid days.

The campground has a section where they put all the AT hikers. It's the worst area in the park and we feel like refugees, however, the facilities here are first class and the weather is superb, so we are pretty lucky.

The hikers I've spotted here are: 'Real', 'Bassman', Cheeseburger', Milkshake' (and Princeton, the dog), plus 'Three Day showed up a short while ago.

That's all for today, so I'll say goodnight all.
