20th May 2002 From:
Econolodge (Daleville) It was interesting to note that five hikers asked for stove fuel refills - four of them wanted alcohol. That's the trend I have noticed between 2000 and 2002. In 2000, an alcohol stove was a rarity; in 2002 they are commonplace. I'm using a Trangia burner with a Westwind stand and am very pleased with it. It takes a little longer to boil, but you can control the simmer and it's very lightweight. Another strong trend this year is the move away from pump type water filters to Aqua-Mira, a chemical treatment. I checked out of the hotel at 11:00 leaving my Sweetwater filter behind in the trash and hiked two miles of the AT to come out on Highway 11. I then walked 3/4 mile to the Post Office to get my "bounce box." I retrieved a good supply of Vegemite and another few odds and ends. I then put my thermals into the box, taped it, and put the address label for Fort Royal on it and sent it on its way. I got back on the AT at 12:30 P.M., had a quick lunch, and pressed on. It was a good day for hiking; cool and hills that weren't too steep. It's good to hit civilization after a while in the forest to get some good food and a few treats, but it always feels great to get back on the trail again. At the shelter here tonight are: Ramblin' Man, Charlie Fox Trot, Heavy D, and Three Day. That's all for today, so I'll say goodnight all. |
