Table 8: Overall Ranking of a Sample of Canadian Customs Brokers based on Apparent Level of Digitalization
The three websites we analyzed, especially Cargo Expediters, and Cargo-Lift have a long journey ahead of them should they decide to fully integrate internet technology into their operations. At the current time, Cargo Expediters and Cargo-Lift have not integrated any of their brokerage services to the internet via their website, and as a result are severely impeding the success of their own business operations. After analyzing the IS/IT initiatives that several companies have taken to improve customer service and cost savings in our literature review, we were able to better understand the need and demand for integrated internet based services. It is quite clear that the internet offers several avenues for a company to improve their operating efficiencies as well as their operation synergies. The Cargo Expediters Ltd. website is a virtual listing of the services that they provide. Cargo-Lift provides only a listing as well, but also assures potential customers that they can connect you to them and transportation companies using EDI technology. Calgary Customs Brokers has managed to provide links to important documents, shipment tracking organizations and Government associations, but could still become more digital by offering some of its services via its website. From the view point of a potential customer of a customs broker, we as a group were unimpressed with the level of digitalization that Cargo Expediters and Cargo-Lift have demonstrated, and feel that Calgary Customs Brokers could still become a more comprehensive player in the digital customs brokerage industry. Upon completion of our research project, we feel we have provided an intelligent and thorough evaluation of the Canadian Customs Broker industry, and how the internet and other IS/IT is affecting/being used.
