The Dvorak symphony No. 8 was part of our November 2001 program. For some reason our group really enjoys playing Dvorak. We have had the pleasure of presenting some of his Slavonic Dances, a tone poem entitled the Noon Witch, and now this work. Dvorak, with his eastern European heritage, learned how developed a thick, sonorous sound that was typical of his compatriate composers. Flowing, sing-able melodies abound accompanied by rich full-textured harmonies. We hope you will enjoy a brief excerpt from the second movement of this symphony, originally labelled as his 4th, in e minor. |
