Syringe tips

There are different sorts of syringe tips. They are very important for the function as water squirter, as the inner diameter of the syringe tip decides about the size of the water jet.

Fortunately this inner diameter is not standardized. It is between 1,2 mm (this is the smallest) up to 2 mm, depending on the model of syringe. (Exception: Catheter tip, look below). So it is nice to have syringes with different nozzle opening diameter! Normally the best is: The bigger the syringe, the bigger the nozzle, for the following reason:

If the opening is very big, small syringes can not be pressed together so fast that you can get a good range.

If the opening is very small, it is hard with big syringes to suck the water in, while squirting you get a thin long lasting water jet.

The size of the opening depends on what you like. The best is to have different sizes of openings, then you can choose.

The most frequent tip is the Luer tip (more exactly: Luer Slip tip). At the size 2cc it is in the middle (centric tip), at sizes from 5cc upwards at the border of the syringe body (eccentric tip).

Luer Slip

There is also the Luer Lock tip to screw a needle on the syringe to hold the needle even more surely. This tip is always in the middle (centric). Many 2 oz syringes (50/60cc) have the Luer Lock tip, rarely also the smaller syringes.

You can look at both tips in comparison here:

Luer Lock (above), Luer Slip (below)

Syringes for syringe pumps have the Perfusor tip, nearly only the 2 oz syringes (50/60cc). It looks similar to the Luer Lock tip.

If you want an especially thick water stream, take a syringe with a Catheter tip.  It has a much bigger size of 2/16 to 3/16 inch (3 to 4 mm). It is available on wound and bladder syringes of 2 oz (50/60 cc) and 3 1/2oz (100 cc).

60cc Catheter

The Record tip was manufactured in Germany up to 1980. It was longer and thinner, and the inner diameter of the nozzle was normally smaller as on the luer tip today: exactly 1 mm or a bit more. With the record tip even the smallest syringes were suitable as water squirters. In Germany they were produced up to 1980 and sold up to 1985 when the guarantee of sterility was over. I still own some 2, 5, 10 and 20 cc syringes with record tip.

Record 10cc

Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to get these disposable syringes with record tip today that are very interesting for especially thin waterjets. Does anybody own some of them, especially in the sizes of 20cc and bigger? I would be very interested.
