The Safest Place to Buy Diamonds is on the Net

 Let Me Tell You Why

This short article is aimed at the Australian Market, the principles however apply worldwide

Once you eliminate the home based agents and the Retailers with a web presence you are usually  left with highly specialised  professional diamond traders and gemmologist.

These professional diamond traders and gemmologists are usually highly capitalised and import direct from the producers in Belgium Israel and USA . This is why there prices are so keen

They sell direct to the public worldwide on the net and via an international network of associates.

They are technically superior to the average sale staff of your local retail chain store and are usually fanatics about quality.

There premises are usually  not retail stores but high security diamond grading and sorting facilities

Lets look at the price logic. The prices are excellent because:

  • They import direct and therefore don't rely on the usual string of local wholesalers and middlemen.

  • They market large volumes to a specialised worldwide market via the net often selling more in a month than the average large retailer sells in a year.

Lets look at the quality logic

Most of the larger internet diamond trading companies employ trained professionals with long term affiliations to diamond and jewellery professional associations.

There staff usually include one or more of the following

  • Graduate Gemmologists

  • Diamond Cutters

  • Diamond Graders and Sorters

  • Geologists

  • International Industry Affiliated Diamond Merchants

Eliminating home based brokers and wheeler dealers.

  • They often have web based e-mail address like Hotmail etc

  • They often use Web based web pages

  • They have no formal company registration

  • They are not traceable via white and yellow pages

  • They are not members of any trade organization

Eliminating retailers with a web presence.

  • There web site description and there "about us" pages will usually identify them as retail stores.

  • The only reasons we would want eliminate trad ional retailers is price considerations and sometimes a lack of diamond knowledge.

  • Most retailers buy from local importers and could never match the prices of the true Internet Diamond Trader

Identifying and double checking a true Internet Diamond Trader

  • They always operate from there own domains and mail servers.

  • There web pages are usually content rich with technical information.

  • Read the "about us" and "contact us" pages of there websites to obtain background information on the company and its owners or directors.

  • Check White Pages, Yellow Pages and City Search for a listing.

  • Check for memberships of trade organizations like The Jewellers Associations that may be mentioned in there web pages. Entry criteria into any of the Diamond and Jewellery trade organizations are very strict and is usually an excellent indication of a companies industry standing

For professional reasons I cannot tell you which companies qualify but with a bit of research you will find them.
