Key facts:

  • Format: .mps (MPEG2)
  • Resolution: PAL (480x576) & NTSC (480x480)
  • Bitrate: depends on target size: 2-3 CDs
  • Quality: Video - Great Quality, better than VHS Audio - Better CD Quality (48kHz, stereo)
  • SVCD capable standalone players will play the VCD on your TV
  • Best quality format, next to DVD of course, that will play on a standalone
  • Hardware MPEG Decoders such as the Hollywood Plus or DXR3 will be utilized in playing the VCD, as opposed to MPEG4 where it all relies on your computer's specifications
  • The quality is great, but of course, less than an original DVD's quality
  • This format is on it's way to becoming a completely adopted standard like VCD 2.0!
  • Last and certainly not least.... IEATLINT's method requires A LOT OF SPACE!! I mean, A LOT! But it does give the best quality! So read before you start...

Software You Will Need:

  • DeCSS (guess what? this isn't a link...find it somewhere else)
  • VOB Utils (Apachez - Tools)
  • Graphedit + Intervideo Audio Filter (Apachez - Tools)
  • ReMPEG2 (Apachez - Tools)
  • Qdesign I-Media Audio MPEG v2.0
  • DV Tool (Apachez - Tools)
  • I-Author + DLL Limit Remover (the 2.6MB one ONLY, the other version out is corrupt!)
  • Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.0+ (sorry, this one is rather large...)

And now... The Guide

1. DeCSS (put the dvd in your dvd-rom and rip to your hard drive, dont merge files)

Note: For this entire procedure, you're going to need plenty of hard drive space. DVD movies are anywhere from 4 to 6 gigs, and u also need the space that the resulting MPEG will occupy, which can be an extra 1 to 2gigs.

I only recommend using DeCSS...way too many reported errors with DoD Speed Ripper.

For this procedure, you only need to rip VOB files AND the IFO File named like it. Starting with the first 1gig file until the end of the files named like it. For example. Vts_01_1.vob is the first 1gig file....select all the files named Vts_01_X.vob except Vts_01_0.vob and Vts_01_0.IFO.

* For those of you having problems ripping to HD (like "Title key might not be encrypted...done") Try to temporarily disable your DVD drive's DMA mode. Right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Device Manager tab, double click on your DVD drive under CDROM and check the Settings tab. Uncheck "DMA" while "Sync Data Transfer" and "Disconnect" should be checked. Auto Insert should be off. These settings provide for faster data transfer and speed reliability. Reboot. Retry to rip. Remember to turn DMA back on after you're done :)

2. VOB Utils (split the vob files according to segment information in IFO)

Open the IFO file in VOB Util and extract ALL the segments to a new folder. (This doubles the space needed)

3. Graphedit (extract WAV from original VOBs)

Copy WavDest.ax supplied in RAR and iviaudio.ax from the Intervideo.zip to \Windows\System.

In Windows, go to "Start -> Run" and type "regsvr32 wavdest.ax" and "regsvr32 iviaudio.ax"

Go to Graphs -> Insert Filters. Under the DirectShow Filters, double-click the following..

(a) File Source (Async.) - Choose the first VOB File and then connect it to...

(b) MPEG-2 Splitter and connect from AC3 out to...

(c) Intervideo Audio Decoder and connect that to...

(d) Wav Dest and finally connect to..

(e) File Writer - Choose where to save the file.wav

Connect each of these by clicking once on the small box output, and dragging it to the next one.

Now, go to Graph -> Play. The program will not tell you when it's done or how it's going. So just look at your computer's busy light or wait until the Play icon returns.

If you need the space, you can delete the VOB you just did.

Repeat this process for each of the following VOBs. After you have all the WAV's, you may delete the original VOBs from the DVD.

4. ReMPEG2 (change the resolution and bitrate of the files outputted from VOB Utils)

It's time to calculate the Video Bitrate. First, you need to choose an audio rate. (I suggest 224) and second, need to select how many CD's you want to put it on. 2 Hours or less should be on 2CD's, for more than 2 hours, try 3 CDs.

Also, you'll need to find out the length of the entire movie in seconds.

Use this formula to calculate the video bit rate:

{S*1024*8 - (T*A)} / T = B

S= Target size in MB. For a 74min disc use 740MB. For a 80min disc use 820MB. For a 99min disc use 990MB. Then multiply that space times the number of discs you're using.

T= The length of the video in seconds

A= The audio bit rate shown above

B= The target bit rate (the formula produces this, you don’t enter it)

For example, a 2 hour movie targeted for 2 cds with a 224 audio bit rate would be:

(1480*1024*8-(7200*224))/7200=1460 (round to closest single digit)

Note: The maximum bitrate you should use, even if aiming for 3 CD's, is 2100.

Now, in reMPEG2.. in the Main tab, click Open and search for your first VOB. It will then take a while making a log and analyzing the VOB.

In the Options tab, the only settings u need to change are to slide the percentage bar as close to the bitrate you calculated without going over .. and choose the 480 x *** resolution. The program will auto-detect NTSC to 480 and PAL to 576. (Note: For the Pioneer 525, use the352 x *** resolution)

Return to the Main tab and press Encode. Remember to save the file as *.m2v on a drive you have free space. This process will take a while.

Repeat this for each of the VOB's created by VOB Utils. Now, all you should have are the WAVs outputted by GraphEdit and the m2v's. Feel free to delete any VOBs you have.

5. QDesign I-media Audio MPEG Pro (best way to encode .wav to .mp2)

File, Open.. and select your first WAV.

Then click on what looks like a yellow Play button followed by a circle, this is labeled "Transcode" Settings should be...

  • Bitrate: 224 (or whatever you chose at the beginning when u made your calculations)
  • Layer: Layer 2

Leave all other settings alone and press OK. Save as filename.mp2

Repeat this process for all of the WAVs you have.

Once you have them all in mp2, feel free to delete all the WAVs you had.

6. DV Tool (merge merge merge)

In Windows, you now need to split the m2v's and mp2's into CD's. Add as many pairs of m2v and mp2s together (in order) till they equal about 648MB for 74min cdrs, 820MB for 80min, 990MB for 99min.

Open DV Tool and click on the File Processor tab. You may need to resize the entire program from the right bottom corner. Select Function - Merge. Click on the .. after Input File. Select all the m2vs in each CD together remember to keep order!

Repeat the process for mp2 files.

Now for each CD you plan on making, you should have 1 m2v (video file) and 1 mp2 (audio file) that correctly corresponds to it. For the next step, I-Author, you must rename the m2v to mpv.

7. I-Author (multiplex and author the final SVCD)

After installing, from the start menu, select Multiplexor in the I-Author folder.

Under video, click on the ... button and select your first .MPV file.

Under audio #1, do the same with the proper .M2V file.

At the bottom for output, click on the ... and save the file somewhere.

Do not change any settings and press "Start".

Ignore any errors by that come up and press continue.

Repeat this for other CD's.

After having an MPS file for each of the CDs you're making, feel free to delete the MPV or M2V files.

When done, click close.

Now, open the actual program from the start menu.

Go to File -> New and select Project File. Select SuperVCD and click OK. The wizard should begin. Hit next a couple times until you see "Start Play Item List".

Click on Add and select your first MPS file. Click next.

Now you are required to use a menu bitmap that you will not really see. Download completely blank bitmaps here. Click the "..." button and browse to your NTSC/Pal blank.bmp. Leave choices as 1, and Start as 1 and click ADD. Click next.

Once again, for Play_item1, click ADD and browse to the same MPS file. Click Finish.

Now, go to the Tool Menu, and select "Create Disc Image." If you get any error windows, you probably did something wrong. Otherwise, congratulations you now have an image of the first CD ready to be burned! Repeat this process for any other CDs.

I would NOT delete the MPS files until you are sure the CD's work properly in your standalone or computer.

8. Adaptec Easy CD Creator (burn babie burn!)

If you have EZCD already installed, all you have to do is double-click the .CIF image file. Remember to burn TRACK-AT-ONCE! It does not matter if you leave the CD session open or closed. Repeat this for all other CDs.

Congratulations, you are finally done! Enjoy your beautiful quality SVCD on your standalone or computer.
