Tools needed:

  • DeCSS or DOD Speed Ripper
  • VOB Utils
  • ReMPEG2 v1.4.1+
  • QDesign
  • I-Author (the 2.6MB one ONLY, the other version out is corrupt!)
  • Adaptec Easy CD (I-Author creates .cif images to burn)
  • Graphedit, WAVDest and Intervideo filters/parsers.
  • DV Tool
  • I-Author DLL crack

This tutorial contains 2 things that will increase the quality of your video. One of which, is the discovery that half D1 resolution is compatible. The other is that a an SVCD is burned in the same modes as a VCD which is giving the disc higher capacity, and since the SVCD is size based unlike the VCD, it can use the full 744MB that is avalible in that mode. These 2 ideas, especially the second, are not to be copied into any other tutorial without my permission, since i am the only person with this information, it will be quite obvious you copied! Read through this entire tutorial before beginning.

Copy the IFO closest to the video VOBs (those big 1GB ones and the smaller one after it) and the video VOBs to your hard drive.

Open the IFO file in VOB Util and extract all the segments to a new folder

Pick an audio bit rate, 128, 224 or 384 are some choices, 384 is excessive for stereo!

Open graphedit insert the VOB from the insert filters menu under the direct show sub structure. You need to specify the source, which is File Writer (Async.), then connect that to the splitter named MPEG-2 Splitter, then the ac3 out to the Intervideo Audio Decoder, then the WAV Dest to the file writer (destination wav).

Use this formula to calculate the video bit rate:

S*1024*8-(T*A)/T=B

S= Target size in MB. For a 74min disc use 740MB. For a 80min disc use 820MB. For a 99min disc use 990MB. Then multiply that space times the number of discs your using (2CD is now reccommended, 3 for best quality! and 4 isnt possible :)

T= The length of the video in seconds

A= The audio bit rate shown above

B= The target bit rate (the formula produces this, you don’t enter it)

For example, a 2 hour movie targeted for 2 cds with a 224 audio bit rate would be:

1480*1024*8-(7200*224)/7200=1460 (round down)

3CD 2hr:

2220*1024*8-(7200*224)/7200=2301 (since rempeg2 is vbr, never aim over 2.1mbit, or 2100kbit..)

NOTE: Keep in mind scientific calculators will calculate multiplication and division first, skipping addition or subtraction, if you get a number that’s bigger then 4 digits to the left of the decimal point, you screwed up!

Go ahead and ReMPEG2 each VOB extracted at the calcualted bitrate with half D1 resolution (352x480NTSC, 352x576PAL)

NOTE: The current ReMPEG2 version does not have support for Constant Bit Rate (CBR) so the bit rate will vary in the output m2v, DO NOT EXPECT 100% ACCURACY IN CALCULATIONS

Open the WAVs in QDesign, then press the transcode settings, be sure to convert it to MPEG Layer II at the desired bitrate with a .mp2 extension. Do this for each WAV, you can delete the WAVs when done, and if you havnt already, the original vobs.

You now need to split the m2v's and mp2's into CD's. Add as many pairs of m2v and mp2s together (in order) till they equal about 648 for 74min cdrs, 820 for 80min, 990 for 99min.

Use DV Tool to merge all the m2vs in each CD together, followed by the mp2s, remember to keep order..

Rename all m2v's to mpv's.

Use I-Author multiplexer to multiplex all the mp2's and mpv's. It may give a max bit rate error, ignore it. You should have a mps for each CD. (You can delete the m2v's and mp2s at this point if needed)

Load I-Author use the mps as the start play list, use a dummy 480x480 or 480x576 (for PAL) blank bmp for the menu. Make the menu then make play list item1 the first mps, item2 the second mps, item3 the third mps, ect. Click finish and select create disc image, repeat for each CD.

Burn with Easy CD Creator

The interactive SVCD menu

Since the instructions given were not only confusing, but inaccurate to what a real SVCD menu is i have removed this temporarily while a new one is being made using completely different methods.

Subtitles:

Although it has been deturmined how to make the subtitles (Without entering time index), the coder I am working with is still working, once he is finished he will publish his results as I provide instructions on how to.
