33. William B. AUSMUS, Captain b. 27 Dec 1834, Union County, Tennessee,
m. (1) Adeline CAWOOD, b. 20 Oct 1847, Union County, Tennessee, d. 11 Jul
1897, Union County, Tennessee, m. (2) Sarah Jane Cawood, b. 24 Nov 1842,
Union County, Tennessee, (daughter of John McCrunnel CAWOOD and Marlena
Van BEBBER) d. 2 Feb 1864, Union County, Tennessee, m. (3) Dorcas BRANSCOMB,
b. 20 May 1862, Union County, Tennessee, d. 16 Mar 1940. William
died 11 Nov 1907, Union County, Tennessee. William was 15 years of
age in 1850; he was enumerated in the household of his father, Benjamin,
in Claiborne County, TN. Compiler did not find William on the 1860 census,
but it is possible that he was married already. The 1870 census shows a
young girl in William's household, who is already nine years old. Adeline,
William's wife, was only 22 years of age at this time, and the couple have
another child in the home who is only one year of age. Compiler strongly
suspects that 9-year-old Mary M. AUSMUS was the child of William and an
earlier spouse than Adeline, but there has been no confirmation of this
theory. The 1870 census also gives William's occupation as "Retail Dry
Goods Merchant." Either his occupation was not listed in 1880, or compiler
failed to copy it from the microfilm. In 1880 there are two additional
persons enumerated in William's home, #8, and three more listed in Dwelling
#8/Family as "Servant." Louisa P. HOPPER, 18, one of the boarders gives
her occupation as "Keeping House." There is an 18-year-old male whose last
name was not readable; "Jefferson __?__" is also listed as a boarder, but
his occupation is "teaching school." The additional family, Joseph and
Easter YADON, both boarders (ages 24/27? and 20 respectively) give their
occupations as "Clerk in store" (Joseph) and "Keeping House" (Easter).
The third person listed with this family is "S.B. HOPPER, 24, Servant,"
however, his occupation is "Teaching School" also. USgendex data provided
by Mark ASHBELL reports that William was married three times, but no dates
are given for any of the marriages. It is unknown which children belonged
to each of the three women.
Sarah: U.S.gendex data does not include dates of Wm. AUSMUS's
3 marriages. Compiler found William B. AUSMUS and family on the Union County,
TN census for 1870. By that enumeration, William was married to Adeline
CAWOOD. Compiler found a grave listing for William B. AUSMUS, Adeline (CAWOOD)
AUSMUS and a "Sarah J. AUSMUS 24 Nov. 1842 - 24 Nov 1861". These three
graves were apparently located in close proximity in the Ausmus Cemetery
in Claiborne County. It seems likely that Sarah J. is Sarah J. CAWOOD,
first wife to William AUSMUS, but the date of death in the cemetery index
does not agree with that given by Joy EDWARDS DAVIS in her "Old Speedwell
Families..." books. Those books give Sarah's year of death as 1864.
