89. Grace A. AUSMUS b. 20 Feb 1891, Dekalb County, Missouri, occupation Homemaker - Methodist,  m. 27 Mar 1912, in Maysville, Missouri, Fred EULINGER, b. 6 Nov 1886, Dekalb County, Missouri, (son of John Eulinger and Nancy Kane) occupation Farmer - Methodist,  d. 28 Jan 1977, Dekalb County, Missouri, buried: 31 Jan 1977, Fairport Cemetery, Fairport, Missouri.  Grace died 8 Apr 1973, Dekalb County, Missouri, buried: 11 Apr 1973, Fairport Cemetery, Fairport, Missouri.  Notes for Grace A. Ausmus: Comments from Aunt Gladys, April 6, 1996:  Grace made her own wedding dress.  She and Fred lived on the John Owen place (presently Glenn Ginn's) for the first year of marriage and then moved to the home place.  Grace's father and two girls moved to Fairport.

Fred and Grace and Nellie and Dave got married together.  They stayed at the St. Frances Hotel in St. Joseph.  There was a big (12") snow storm, but Fred was sowing oats within two weeks.

 Fred: Eulinger:

Philip Eulinger was born in Switzerland.  Henrietta Eulinger was born in Switzerland.  John Eulinger was born in St. Joseph, Missouri.  Nancy Kane was born in Missouri.

I can't think what Grandma Eulinger's (Nancy Kane) parents were given names were.  Though have heard Grandma (Nancy Kane) says her mother's name was Baker and was born in Illinois and that she thought her father was born in Missouri.  Think I've told you that Grandma's (Nancy Kane) mother died when Grandma (Nancy Kane) was just a very young girl and that her father was blind.  So the children were taken by different relatives to be broght up.  So the reason for Grandma (Nancy Kane) not speaking of them.  She talked more about the aunt who took her.

The Eulinger's as you know came from Switzerland and at first settled in Ohio.  They came from there to St. Joseph, Missouri with Joseph Robidoux (did I spell that right) and Grandfather Eulinger (Philip) had one of the first trading posts in St. Joseph.  So as you know Robidou traveled by boat from Ohio down Ohio River across Mississippi river and up the Missouri and it's daid he parked his boat in Blacksnake Creek that ran into Missouri River where main part of St. Joseph is now.  And as I say Grandma Eulinger didn't know too much of her folks as shw was young when she was sent to live with an aunt over east of where the Pittsenbarger's lived.  Grandpa (John) met her at a Sunday School picnic at that chuch south of Elmer's place.   Well, if I had ever know anyone would of wanted history I might of listened at old timers better.

 Ausmus:

I didn't now you wanted to know how our ancestors came.  The Aumsus family came to America from Germany and settled, or helped sttle, Jamestown, Virginia.  My Grandpa's mother came from Baden, Germany.  Great Grandpa Bradshaw came from Ireland, also his wife who was a niece of General Green who is called in history General Wahington's right hand man.

Grandpa and Grandma Durbin were Irish but born in US.  He was born in Ohio and Grandma in Kentucky.  They traveled to Missouri in covered wagons in 1869 and built the home over where you know it in 1870.  The Ausmus ffamily went by covered wagon to Illinois in 1871 and came to Missouri by wagon in 1878 and 1880.  Grandpa and Uncle Frank came here and started to improve this farm in 1878 and Grandma and my Dad came in 1880 after selling the farm they had near Red Oak, Iowa.

Paius Durbin was born in Ohio.  Margaret Barker Durbin was born in Kentucky.  Philip Ausmus was born in Illinois.  Mary Jane Bradshaw Ausmus was born in Illinois.  George Douglas Ausmus was born in Illinois.  Susan Catharine Durbine was born in Kentucky.

Dear C.J. and All, I have been putting this off so setting here doing nothing.  You can use what you want of it.  As don't expect you have room for all.  We are very well.  But this weather.  Had to have a baby calf in yesterday a.m.  Sure glad had heat in back entry.  We called Willis, but Dad took an old overcoat and wrapped calf in it or would have been gone before Willis got here.  And was to far down in pasture for Dad to carry it in.  Glad I know we will have nicer weather someday.  Mom. End of Grace's Letter.
