Dec 1913 CEMETERY: LOCATION IN CEMETERY: Brackeen UNMARKED
NOTES: From the records of Elizabeth Booth: (No source for
the following information was given). Believed to be buried in Brackeen
Cemetery in an unmarked grave. Born in Clinton Co., KY., son of James G.
Brackeen (who was born in same county 11 Nov 1811). Moved to Texas in 1857.
James G. was a sheriff, farmer and a Baptist, and married Emaline, daughter
of James Noland. She was also born in Clinton Co., KY. Their children were
Robert E., James Shelby, William L., Pleasant H., Sallie Elizabeth, and
Nannie Brackeen (who married Tom Price). James Shelby Cross was the grandson
of Robert Cross, one of the first settlers of Clinton Co., KY. The county
seat in Albany, Clinton Co., KY., is built on part of the Robert Cross
land. James Shelby Cross married Nancy A. Brackeen, Lamar Co. Marriage
Record Book 3, p. 10, daughter of James Madison and Miranda Shelton Brackeen.
[See Nancy's record for children] James Shelby Cross was a farmer and owned
575 acres and also a general store. He enlisted in Co. F., Stephen's Regiment,
CSA, in 1862 and became ill in 1863 and returned home. After recovering,
he raised a company called Co. C., Good's Battalion, CSA and was elected
Lieutenant. It is also believed that his father, James G. Cross, is buried
here but no markers have ever been found to mark their graves. *From an
undated-unnamed newspaper obituary clipping from 'The Paris Scrapbook'
donated by Skipper Steely, handwritten date of December 29, 1913: 'J. S.
Cross, one of the old residents of Lamar county, died suddenly at Howland
at 6 o'clock last evening. He was taken sick at 1 o'clock in the afternoon
or acute indigestion. He hadn't been very well for the past year and about
a week ago he slipped and fell on the floor and sustained a fractured rib.
When he was seized with indigestion, doctors were summoned and did all
they could for him, but he grew steadily worse, death ensuing in a few
hours. 'Uncle Sheb' Cross, as he was known by most of his acquaintances,
was born in Kentucky seventy-six years ago last July and came to Texas
in 1857, locating at Pleasant Grove, near the present site of Howland.
He was married in 1858 to Miss Nancy Brackeen and is survived by six children,
twenty-three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom reside
in Lamar county. Mrs. C. M. Morgan lives in Paris, Mrs. E. G. McGlasson
and D. S. Cross at Roxton and Mrs. Alice Bledsoe, Mrs. T. F. Justiss and
E. B. Cross at Howland. He was making his home with Mrs. Justiss when his
death occurred. He was the last member of his father's family, but a sister-in-law,
the widow of his youngest brother, resides in New York. He served in the
Confederate army as a Lieutenant in Capt. J. M. Daniel's artillery and
made a good record as a soldier. He joined the Baptist church several years
ago at Pleasant Grove and was always regarded as one of the best men in
the community. He possessed a warm heart, was a most companionable man
and was liked by everybody who knew him. He was especially popular among
little children, all of whom loved him. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock
this afternoon at the Brackeen graveyard six miles southwest of Paris and
will be conducted by Rev. J. H. Ezell of Petty.' *From the records of Lamar

'James B. Griffis Was Instantly Killed And Three Others Had Narrow Escapes.
An explosion which occurred just before 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon shook
every house on the north west side of Paris, and was heard by people several
miles away. The shock was the bursting of an empty gasoline tank on the
Santa Fe track, near the corner of Connor and Shiloh Streets, the explosion
being caused by a lighted match dropped into the tank by James B. Griffis,
a youth about twenty years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. Griffis, who
live at the corner of Graham and West streets. Young Griffis was instantly
killed, and three other boys with him had miraculous escapes. An Advocate
reporter, who reached the place a few minutes afterwards, learned from
one of them, Roy McClellan, the details of the accident. A long line of
empty cars, including the tank, were on the track which runs from the Union
depot to North Main Street, and four boys, Jim Griffis, Roy McClellan,
Ralph Mathieson and Charlie Devlin, were playing about them. Jim and Roy
were on the empty tank, which was Waters-Pierce Oil Company No. 318, and
the other two boys were on the ground on the west side of the first car
north, a box car, St. L.R.C. Co., No. 905. Jim remarked that he believed
he would drop a match into the tank through one of the ventilating holes
in the dome, and Roy told him he had better not. As Jim drew the match
from his pocket Roy started off the tank on the north end, and that was
the last he knew until he found himself on the ground fifteen or twenty
feet from the car, having been thrown there by the explosion. He was unhurt,
but his clothes were singed nd torn. The other two boys on the ground were
badly shaken, but not injured, and Jim was blown into the air, his body
being dropped close to the track about 125 feet south of the center of
the tank. James Griffis' funeral was held this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock
at the family residence, by Rev. Charles Manton of the Cumberland Presbyterian
church, and the burial took place immediately afterwards at Evergreen.
A large concourse of friends followed the body to its last resting place,
and condoled with the family on their sudden and awful bereavement.'

Roche, an old resident of Paris, expired suddenly at his home at the corner
of Plum and Eighteenth street, about 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. He
had not been complaining and had just eaten a hearty dinner after which
he entered his room and lighted his pipe and sat down in his rocking chair
to smoke. He hadn't been seated long before all at once he leaned his head
back and died without a struggle and without speaking a word. A little
grandchild, the 3-year old son of Mrs. B. T. Conley was in the room with
him and he ran to his mother and told her that something was the matter
with grandpa. She entered the room and found him sitting in his rocker
dead with his head resting on the back of the chair. Funeral arrangements
have not been made yet, and will be announced later. He would have been
77 years old in June and was born in Ireland, but he came to America at
the age of two years with his parents, who settled in Wisconsin. He lived
there until he was 14 years old, and went from there to Mississippi. He
had been living but a few years in Mississippi before the civil war began
and he enlisted in the Confederate army and served throughout the struggle
as a member of Forest's cavalry. He was wounded on the battlefield four
times in four different States. Receiving an honorable discharge at the
close of the war he came to Lamar county in 1866 and worked on Col. D.
K. Fooshee's farm west of Paris in the old Shiloh community four years.
In 1869 he married Miss Ada Brackeen, daughter of Uncle Jimmy Brackeen,
an old settler, and after his marriage he continued to farm at the Shiloh
community, buying a place of his own, which he owned at the time of his
death. He bought a farm on the river at Mulberry in Fannin county, on which
he farmed until he retired, and had since made his home in Paris. He often
remarked that he never did anybody an injustice and that he never owed
a dollar that he didn't pay. His wife died nearly two years ago, but he
is survived by eight children; J. S. Roche of Oklahoma City, W. E., R.
E. and M. J. Roche of Paris, Mrs. B. T. Conley and Mrs. Chas. Roach of
Paris and Mrs. John W. Clem of New Mexico. In addition to his sons and
daughters, he is survived by twenty grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.'

NOTES: THE PARIS MORNING NEWS, Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1917: 'Tragedy
On Pine Creek Over Family Affair -- M. H. Sims of Hugo, OK., a former resident
of Lamar County, was killed about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the
home of his son in law, J. S. Landers, between eight and nine miles northeast
of Paris on the D. S. Hammon farm on Pine Creek, The tragedy was the result
of family trouble which resulted in the separation of Mr. Landers and his
wife a year or two ago and the institution of a divorce suit by Mrs. Landers,
which is still pending. Two of the children, boys six and eight years old,
are staying with their father and the mother has possession of three of
them. The two little boys were the only eye witnesses to the killing. ^According
to the statement of Mr. Landers the deceased arrived at his home from Hugo
in a jitney with two men who put him our at John Irwin's, half a mile from
where Landers lived, and drove away about 1:30 o'clock. He and his two
little boys were in the field picking cotton and the deceased went to where
they were and drew a pistol and made him shed his cotton sack and march
in front of him at the point of the pistol to Marvin Bailey's, a neighbor
living about a quarter of a mile from his home. When he reached Mr. Bailey's,
the deceased stopped to talk to the latter's wife and while he was talking
to her Landers gave him the slip and went around the house and across the
field to his home. ^When the deceased got through talking to Mrs. Bailey
and discovered that he was gone he went to Irwin's in search of him, but
failing to find him, then went to his home. Landers stated that when he
saw the deceased coming he got his shotgun and sat out in the hall to protect
himself, and that the deceased approached the house from the hack way and
came around the smokehouse with his pistol in his hand. As soon as he turned
the corner of the smokehouse in view of the gallery Landers fired at him
with a shotgun loaded with No. 6 shot. ^Only one barrel was discharged
while he was about ten steps away and the contents took effect in the lower
part of his face and neck and all over the breast. The deceased turned
and walked five or six steps and fell and expired. The two little boys
of Mr. Landers were standing in the road near the house when the sot was
fired. ^As soon as the shooting occurred Landers got his neighbors, Bailey
and Irwin, to notify Sheriff Clarkson, who went out to the place accompanied
by Deputy Sheriff McDonald and County Attorney Grady Sturgeon, and they
found him at home waiting to surrender, he claiming self-defense. Sheriff
Clarkson brought the body of Mr. Sims to Paris in his automobile and turned
it over to Emberson and Brown, undertakers, who notified his wife. ^The
examining trial of the defendant will be held before Justice of the Peace
Jay Hall at 9 o'clock this morning. In the meantime by agreement between
his attorney Judge Rube Wells and County Attorney Sturgeon the temporary
bond was fixed at $500, which he made with D. S. Hammond and Tobe Ingram
as sureties and was released. ^The deceased was a resident of Lamar County
for a long time and farmed several years in the Harmon community. Later,
he moved northeast of Paris to the West Point community and bought a farm,
which he still owned at the time of his death. He was engaged in the hotel
business in Paris awhile and moved to Hugo less than a year ago and was
engaged in the hotel business there a few months. He was about 55 years
old and leaves a wife and three or four children. ^J. S. Landers is 34
years old and has lived in Lamar county about 12 years. He has had the
reputation among his acquaintances of being a quiet, peaceable man.' *Information
