b. __ ___ 1858, d. __ ___ 1920.  Ella died 22 Nov 1948.
They moved to Beeville in 1906.  Ella Byler is said to have been a staunch Methodist - a firm believer in the Bible.  She kept
a supply of Gospels and would give one with the free meals she frequently gave to travellers during the depression of the thirties.
She had thick sorrel hair.  She was born on her grandfather's ranch in Fayette County.  She grew up on Rancho Seco in Nueces County.
Ranch Seco became Bluntzer, Texas.  She was well educated having attended the female college at Chappell Hill, Texas.  She taught
at Lagarta College which was the equivalent of a high school.  J. Frank Dobie, the writer, wrote lovingly and respectfully of his mother.
Ella had the small hump in her nose which I have come to believe was characteristic of the family as far back as Jacob Byler who died
in North Carolina, or, perhaps, of his wife.  I would like to point out that Ella Jane Byler was a third cousin of my father, Jesse D.
Byler who had the same shaped nose and which I have to some extent.

    Children:
      i James Frank "J Frank" DOBIE b. 26 Sep 1888, m. 20 Sep 1916, Bertha McKEE.  James died 18 Sep 1964.  James
Frank "J. Frank" Dobie 26 Sep 1888 married Bertha McKee 20 Sep 1916.  He graduated from Beeville High School, got the AB at Georgetown University in 1910 and the MA at Columbia University, N. Y. in 1914.  He taught English at Texas University from
1914 - 1943 and was visiting professor of American History at Cambridge University in England during WW II.  He was fired by
the regents of the University of Texas in 1947 after he had stretched his original one year leave of absence to four years.  He is the
most important author Texas has produced, having become famous as a collector and writer of frontier tales which he put into some
thirty books.  It is said that Lyndon Banes Johnson used to love to point out the Lincoln Room at the White House as the place where
J Frank Dobie slept.  The Houston Post for 19 Sep 1964 in giving an account of Dobies's death said, "Dobie was among 30 prominent Americans, including Carl Sandburg, selected for the Presidential 'Medal of Freedom' in July."
      ii Fannie Byler DOBIE b. 5 Dec 1890, m. 28 Jun 1933, T. Rucker STANFORD.
      iii Elrich DOBIE b. 13 Apr 1893, m. (1) 4 Sep 1923, Molly M. McBETH, m. (2) 15 Mar 1941, Mrs. Ludie McMains
TRAMMEL.  Elrich was not a writer like his brother "J Frank" Dobie although he did allow himself to be interviewed about his rather
dramatic life.  He worked on the King Ranch, in Mexico and in India in a government program.  One of these articles was
published in The Ranch Magazine Oct 1968, pg. 24.  Elrich told Roger Byler some of the stories of his life.  He was possibly as good
a story teller as his brother, only he did not write them down.  He told that he was employed by the King Ranch to build a 60 mile
long fence to Laguna Madre. Then, he was sent to Mexico to buy bulls to use in bringing in the wild cattle on the King Ranch.  Once
on the King Ranch, he was wounded in the leg in a brush with Mexican bandits.  He volunteered for the Navy in WW II but was
refused on account of the wound.  He worked for the Immigration Service at El Paso.  Then, the Army took him into the Cavalry,
made him a corporal and put him in charge of the horses.  Later he was transferred to Officers Training. He had no children.
      iv Richard Lee DOBIE b. 29 Sep 1895, m. 27 Oct 1917, Elizabeth KERR.  Richard died 26 Nov 1956.
      v Henry Gladstone DOBIE b. 22 May 1898, m. 9 Nov 1929, Ethel KEOWN.  Henry died 1 Oct 1963.
      vi Martha DOBIE b. 18 Oct 1900.

103. Rufus Franklin "Frank" BYLER b. 15 Mar 1864, High Hill, Fayette County, Texas, m. 21 Dec 1892, in Lagarto, Texas,
Mary Orie BEALL, b. 17 Oct 1867, Spring Creek, George West, TX, (daughter of Sam BEALL and Mary Elizabeth HICKMAN)
d. 14 Oct 1938.  Rufus died 22 Apr 1922.
See the New Encylopedia of Texas. On page 2123, there is a picture of Frank Byler which shows that he, too, had a long nose
with a hump on it. Frank and Orie Byler lived for a while after their marriage in Nueces County on the Barbon Ranch which he
had under lease and which remained under lease to the Byler family until after her death in 1938.  In the 1880's he bought the
Sealey Ranch just north of Ramirena Creek.  Also he owned a ranch in Duval County.  The family says that at his death, he owned
nearly 9000 acres.  The New Encyclopedia of Texas says he owned and operated the Sealey Ranch of 8000 acres in Live Oak
County and owned 3000 acres in Nueces County which he leased out.  It says also that he had a number of farms in Live Oak County,
growing cotton on the home farm of 100 acres near Mathis.  I would guess that he disposed of some of the land before his death.
Frank Byler was a Mason of the Blue Lodge of Mathis.  After his death, his wife took over the management of their property and
considerably increased the value.  She became a director of the First State Bank of Mathis.

Their eleven children were born at Lagarto.  Eight of them died at birth or a short time after birth and are buried in the Lagarto
Cemetery.  Three daughters survived.  The Bylers lived at Lagarto until 1912 when they moved to Mathis so Bessie could start
school because the school at Lagarto had closed. In a typed paper furnished by Virginia Horton, it is said that Rufus Byler was
known to be honest and forthright.  His wife is said to have been very kind and generous.  "Her home or table was never too
small to provide one more person a place to stay or a good meal to eat."  Of the nearly 9000 acres the three girls inherited,
Fannie sold her part; Bessie sold part of hers; Lucille kept all of hers.  Betty, Kaffy and Bud now run thier part of the ranch.

b. 26 Mar 1848, Tennessee, d. 3 May 1927, Dodd City, Fannin County, Texas.  Anderson died 8 Sep 1920, Fannin County,
Texas.  From Goodspeed's History of North Arkansas, pp. 959-960 A.A. Marchant, farmer, Melbourne, Ark.  Among the
leading men of Mill Creek Township none are more prominently identified with the farming and stock raising interests of the same
than Mr. Marchant, who by his industry, perseverance and integrity, is considered one of its first-class farmers.  He was born in
Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1841, and when nineteen years of age started out in life for himself, his first venture being to hire
out to one man as a farm hand for two years.  When twenty-one years of age he donned his suit of blue, and enlisted in the First
Arkansas Infantry, United States Army, Company C, and served for six months, when he was discharged at St. Louis, Mo., in
December, 1863.  After this he drove a team for the government, and acted as guide until 1864, when he enlisted in the Forty-Eighth
Missouri, Company E, for twelve months, and served only nine months, when he was discharged again in St. Louis, on the 1st of
July, 1865.  At the close of the war he was at Chicago, Ill., guarding the prisoners.  After cessation of hostilities he came home
and engaged in farming, which he followed on rented land one year until 1871, when he bought land in Baxter County.  He only
remained on this land one year, but continued in the county until 1874, when he moved to Izard County, and, in 1879, bought his
present property consisting of 163 acres, with about 100 acres under cultivation.  At the close of the war he had only about $50 or
$60 in money, and not a horse, hog or cow.  On the 16th of July, 1865, he wedded Miss Amanda F. Dixon, a native of Izard County,
although they were married in Miller County, Missouri.  They became the parents of these children:  W.B., lives in the Choctaw
Nation: T.J. (deceased); J.W., at home; Rufus, at home, and Minnie M.  Mr. Marchant is a member of the I.O.O.F., is a member
of the Christian Church, and is a Republican in his political views.  Mrs. Marchant belongs to the Baptist Church.
    Children:
i Wells Berneice MARCHANT b. 26 Jul 1866, Izard County, Arkansas.  Her place of birth has been listed as Izard County
and also Baxter County, Arkansas.  It is possible that she was born in Izard County and that part of Izard County was used to
form Baxter County in 1873.
ii Thomas G. MARCHANT b. 14 Oct 1868, Izard County, Arkansas, buried: Talley Cemetery, Izard County, Arkansas.
Have seen sources that give his name as T. J. but think that was wrong. He was born in Izard and then Baxter Counties.  Suspect
that when born, it was Izard County and that part of Izard County became part of the newly formed Baxter County in 1873.  There
are no dates on his headstone at Talley Cemetery.

Dr. Shadrach Ephram Byler was born 12 February 1858.  He attended school at Nubbin Ridge and later the LaCrosse
Academy.  In 1880, he left Izard County, Arkansas to attend the American Medical College in St. Louis, Missouri.  He graduated
in 1884 and returned to LaCrosse to establish his practice.  On 4 April 1887, he married Miss Lauraetta Downing at the home of
John Bramlett at LaCrosse.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. W. Miller.  Lauraetta Downing Byler was born 8 September
1858 in Wayne County, Tennessee.  She met Dr. Byler when he visited Wayne County in 1886 with a Mr. Linn.  In April 1887 she
traveled with her aunt, Jemima Morrow, to LaCrosse staying with her uncle and aunt, John and Elizabeth Morrow Bramlett, until her
wedding day.
The couple remained in LaCrosse until 1889 when they returned to Wayne County, Tennessee with their young son, Edgar.
They traveled by train from Batesville to Memphis, thence by river steamer up the Mississippi and Tennessee rivers to Clifton,
Tennessee and then overland by ox cart. Lauraetta mother had sent a carriage and team to meet them in Clifton but Lauraetta

would not ride with the carriage; she thought that the young pair were to skittish.  So the carriage was returned to the farm and an
oxcart with a pair of oxen was sent to fetch them.
Dr. Byler died 22 December 1920 in Collinwood, Tennessee and his wife Lauraetta died 23 July 1939 also in Collinwood.

Buried in the Jackson Plot N/W corner of 1st and H street, Oaklawn Cemetery, Batesville, Arkansas. Jesse:
Jesse Mack Hayden was born in Pontotoc County, Mississippi.  He moved with his widowed mother and older sister, Sarah O.
and younger brother, William Ransom to the Mountain Home, Arkansas area in 1868.  His mother died in 1870 and his sister
married in 1870.  Nothing much is known about the activities of him and his brother until ten years later when records of their
families start showing up in Stone County, Arkansas.  Both brothers homesteaded adjacent land in Stone County at Optimus, Arkansas.
Jesse Mack married Malinda Byler, daughter of Sheriff Abraham G. Byler (first sheriff of Baxter County, Arkansas) and wife
Elizabeth Heasley. Byler's parents and Heasley's parents were earlier settlers in Izard County, Arkansas.
Sometime around 1888 after the birth of their third son, the family moved to Delta, Colorado.  Another son, Ransom was born in
Delta.  Three years later twins, Earl and Pearl were born in April, 1892.  Their place of birth was Olathe, Colorado near Delta.
When my father, Ransom applied for a Birth Certificate many years later he and his brother pieced together information for the
application.  On this certificate they stated that their father's occupation at that time was "Truck Farmer".
Very soon after the twins were born, their grandfather, Sheriff Abraham G. Byler of Baxter County and his namesake, a grandson
named Abraham G. Byler, son of John Byler, traveled to Colorado to visit the family and see the newborn twins.  At that time
my father Ransom would have been 3 years old.  It is not hard for me to imagine Grandfather Byler bouncing him on his knee and
reciting, "Trot a little horsey, down to town, Uh Oh horsey don't fall down." This is something that Ransom always did with his
own children and grandchildren.  Sheriff Byler and his grandson returned to Mountain Home and about a month later he was killed
by Jesse Roper in the line of duty.
Not long after that incident Jesse and his family moved back to Optimus, Arkansas and there he lived the remainder of his days.
Pearl, it has been related, remembered that the whole family made several trips back to Colorado to buy horses and brought
them back to Arkansas for resale.  This particular breed of horse was well thought of in Arkansas for its sure-footed ability and
stamina in the rugged terrain of North Central Arkansas.

A picture of Dr. William Ransom Hayden, Jesse's brother hangs today in the Ozark Folk Center in Mt. View, Arkansas.  In
the picture Doctor Hayden sits astride "Clyde" with his medical bag hanging from the saddle horn.  Clyde was a trusty companion
for Dr. Hayden on his rounds as a country doctor.  He was a strong swimmer and it is reported that Clyde swam and forded the
White River many times with Dr. Hayden on his back.  Clyde knew the way home in the darkness of the Ozark Hills around Stone
and Izard county, and it is reported that Dr. Hayden caught up on some of his missed sleep while Clyde made his way home from
a late night call.
It is known that Clyde was one of those "Colorado Horses" and my cousin Roy and I speculate that it was presented to William
Ransom from his brother Jesse when in August, 1895 William passed his examination and began to practice medicine in Arkansas.
Jesse Mack died suddenly in 1905 at the young age of 51 years.  By this time Earl and Pearl the youngest were going to school
in Mt. Olive and soon went on their way in life.  My father, Ransom tells that he was his mother's "girl- child."  With all the other
family members gone from home he remained and said that she had him doing household chores.  Some of these habits followed
him until his death at the age of 90 years.  He always washed the dishes after the evening meal and during a lot of his years prepared
the Sunday dinner. Ransom was in France as a member of the US Army in 1918 and while there his mother died at the home of
another son, John in Newport, Arkansas.

From a story in True West Magazine, August 1997, Vol 44, No. 8, pp 31-34 (picture p. 33). True West Legends: The Wild
Bunch Women, by Donna B. Ernst.
October 1876--Laura Bullion is born in Washington County, Arkansas, to Henry and Fereby (Byler) Bullion.  She is the oldest
of three children when her mother takes them home to Dove Creek, Texas.  After her mother's death in 1891, Laura moves on
and supports herself as a dance girl and as a prostitute at Fannie Porter's house. [San Antonio, TX]
November 8, 1901--Laura Bullion and Ben Kilpatrick, traveling as Mr. and Mrs. John Arnold, are arrested in Saint Louis,
Missouri, carrying banknotes from the Wagner, Montana train holdup of July 1901.  She pleads guilty and is sentenced to five
years in the state penitentiary.
1905-1961--Laura Bullion is released early from prison on September 9, 1905, and begins life anew under the alias Freda Arnold.
She works as a seamstress in Atlanta, Georgia, and Birmingham, Alabama, while awaiting Ben's release from prison.  After Ben is
killed during a train robbery near Sanderson, Texas, in 1912, Laura moves to Memphis, Tennessee, where she dies December 2, 1961,
as Mrs. Freda Lincoln.
Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.  Laura's great-niece placed a headstone on her grave which reads: Freda
Lincoln--Laura Bullion--The Thorny Rose.

True West Magazine (April 1992) had a picture of Laura, her aunt Viana Carver, Serena P. and Elliot R. Byler.  The story
was by Mrs. Nick Bullion - "He" wasnt Laura's great "Nephew" stated also Bernice Byler Haag (who is she) was Laura's cousin.
Mrs. Nick Bullion re-married her name was Carolyn Bullion McBryde, who wrote the story in True West Magazine.  She put the
stone up.

Memphis Commercial Appeal, Thursday, January 12, 1995 Cohort of Butch, Sundance ‘retired' here Perre Magness - Past
Times  Freda Lincoln lived a quiet life for 43 years, making a living as a seamstress in Memphis.  She told people she was a widow.
When she died of heart disease on Dec. 2, 1961, few suspected she had a secret deep in her past.
Freda Lincoln was the last surviving member of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, and had known Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid
and other notorious Western badmen.
Her real name was Laura Bullion.  She was born near Mertzon, Texas; her grave marker gives the date as 1876.  Her parents
were Henry Bullion and Freida Byler.  Her mother had a sister named Viana Byler, who had married a man named Bill Carver
when she was 17.   Bill Carver had been a respected cowboy until he took up with Harvey Logan and Ben Kilpatrick.  Harvey was
better known as Kid Curry; he and his brother Lonny followed their uncle Flat-Nosed George Curry into the family business of
robbing trains.
They hung out in a place called Hole-in-the-Wall, near Jackson, Wyo., when they weren't robbing trains.  There they were joined
by Bill Carver; Ben Kilpatrick, called The Tall Texan, and O.C. Hanks, known as Deaf Charlie.

When the Hole-in-the-Wall boys found a job too big for then to handle, the would call in members of another outlaw gang called
the Wild Bunch for help.
The Wild Bunch were primarily cattle rustlers, but they were glad to branch out into other lines of work.
Their leader, Robert Leroy Parker, was better known by the name of Cassidy, after the man who taught him riding, roping and
rustling.  As Butch Cassidy, he rode with the McCarty brothers, whose father had come from Tennessee after the Civil War.
A later recruit was a kid named Harry Longabaugh, from Sundance, Wyo., who became the Sundance Kid.
On Sept. 19, 1900, the two gangs got together to rob the bank in Winnemucca, Nev.  Afterward, the robbers split up.
Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Kid Curry Logan, Bill Carver and The Tall Texan went to Fort Worth, Texas, where they
had their picture made.
They were joined by Sundance's girlfriend, Etta Place, and Ben Kilpatrick's girl, called Della Rose.  The Pinkerton detectives
called Della a "consort of criminals."  Della was really Laura Bullion, niece of Bill Carver's wife Viana.
Viana had died just three days short of her 18th birthday.  When Bill was killed in Sonora, Texas, on April 1, 1901, he had in his
pocket her wedding ring, and a photograph, described as "his wife's niece, who looks just like her."  It was a picture of Laura, alias
Della, alias Freda.
On July 3, 1901, the surviving members of the two gangs got together again, this time for a train robbery, holding up the Great
Northern railway near Wagner, Mont.  With the loot in his pocket, Ben Kilpatrick went back to Texas, and picked up Laura/Della.
Cassady, Longabaugh (Sundance) and Etta decided to cool things down in South America.  They settled in Argentina, bought
a ranch in the lonely region of Patagonia, and farmed quietly for a few years.
  But old habits died hard.
In 1906, they robbed an Argentine bank, then another one, then a train in Bolivia, then other banks and stores.
One story has it that they were all shot to death by the Bolivian army in 1906 or 1909.
Another says Harry Longabaugh died quietly in Oregon in 1956.
Other stories have Butch Cassidy managing a ranch in Mexico, or back in the United States visiting his family in Utah in 1925,
or dying of cancer in Spokane, Wash., in 1937, or prospecting with Wyatt Earp in Alaska, or touring the West in a Model T, or
turning up in a Wild West Show in San Francisco.
There have been almost as many sightings of Butch Cassidy as of Elvis.
Laura Bullion and Ben Kilpatrick took their proceeds from the train job and lived lavishly under the names Della Rose and James
A. Allen in St. Louis, but not for long.  The bills from the robbery, unsigned bank notes, were identified when Ben tried to spend
them in a St. Louis jewelry store.

Kilpatrick was charged with forgery, and on Dec. 12, 1901, he was sentenced to 15 years in the federal penitentiary in Atlanta.
Della, or Laura, was sentenced to five years as an accessory.  She was sent to the Massachusetts Correctional Institution for
Women, the country's only women's prison at the time.  She served her time, and went home to Texas to wait for Ben.

He was released early, in 1911, but brought home to Texas in chains, charged with murder in a 1901 killing.  He was tried and
acquitted, because the only witnesses were his brothers, sisters and mother.

Not long after, several banks were robbed by a tall bandit.  Kilpatrick swapped his prison release suit for tailor-made clothes
and fancy boots.

Less than a year later, on March 12, 1912, the Tall Texan robbed his last train.  Ben Kilpatrick was killed near Lozier, Texas,
on the westbound Southern Pacific.

It was the last major train robbery attempt in Texas, and the last know criminal act of any member of the old Wild
Bunch/Hole-in-the-Wall Gang.

Laura's whereabouts are unknown for the next few years, but in 1918 she turned up in Memphis, saying she was a war
widow and that her husband had been named Maurice Lincoln.

For the next 43 years, she supported herself in Memphis.

In 1920, the City Directory listed her as a seamstress at the Jennings Furniture Co., with rooms at 221 Monroe.  From
1927 to 1948, she was listed as "householder" at 1374 Madison.  First she was listed as "drapery maker," but by 1940, she was
upgraded to "interior decorator."

Then her fortunes declined.  In 1950, she moved to 1065 Walker Avenue with no profession listed, and the next year she moved
to 3691 Southern, then in 1952 to 733 Decatur.

She disappears from both the City Directory and the telephone book from 1953 to 1959, when she is listed as living at 278
Crossitt Place, where she was living when she died.

On Dec. 4, 1961, Dr. A.B. Thripp of the Shelby County Hospital certified she had died on Dec. 2.  Her obituary says she
died at 6:45 p.m. at the Shelby County Hospital.  She was an Episcopalian, and graveside services were held at Memorial Park
Cemetery, by the J.W. Norris Funeral Home, at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 4.

A bronze marker at the cemetery reads:  Freda Bullion Lincoln  Laura Bullion  The Thorny Rose  1867         1961  Who chose
"The Thorny Rose" for her epitaph?  Did she ever talk about long-ago days and relive the excitement?  Did anyone believe her\ if she did?

Letter from C.F. ‘Charley' Eckhardt, historian and writer specializing in Texas and The American West to Mrs. Clarice Hellums,
Walls, Mississippi:

Dear Mrs. Hellums,  I can answer some of your questions but not all of them.  I'm not a genealogist and I've made no study of
the Byler family apart from its outlaw connections.  Viana E. Byler's husband was William R. Carver, born ca. 1865 in Wilson County,
Texas.  The exact date of his birth is unknown.  Texas did not require public registration of births in 1901.  Carver was orphaned
in the 1870s, probably as a result of the barbed-wire wars in south Texas during that period.  He was living with an uncle and
working as a cowboy in Bandera County by the early 1880s.  Carver was noted as a horse-trainer early in his career, and a Bill
Carver-trained cowhorse was considered a major prize.  Ladies in Bandera County in the 1950s recalled him as dark-haired,
blue-eyed, very handsome, and quitet and shy around girls.  They also recalled him as an excellent dance partner when he could
be coaxed onto the dance floor, and a much-prized box-lunch-buyer at box socials.  When he left Bandera County is unknown,
but he turns up on payroll books of ranches in Sutton, Irion, and Tom Green counties by the late 1880s, as does his uncle.  He
was working on the Cave & Stilson ranch in Sutton County in 1891-92, when he and Viana met.  Viana E. Byler died two days
short of her 18th birthday, seven months into marriage.  She is buried in the Byler family plot at the Shamrock cemetery, but she
has no headstone and the cemetery's book lists her as ‘Viana E. Byler,' not as ‘Viana Byler Carver.'  All indications point to a
shotgun wedding and death in childbirth.  Carver would have been 25 or 26 at the time they married, about eight years older
than Viana.  About 1897, five years after Viana's death, Carver told his friends "The next time you see me I'll be wearing diamonds
or a pine box."  He partnered with Samuel Ketchum in bank and train robbery.  It was Bill Carver who carried the mortally-wounded
Sam Ketchum to a New Mexico ranch after a gunfight with the law following a Colorado Souther train robbery in 1899.  He then
joined Flat-nose George Curry and the Logan brothers in the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang.  He was killed in Sonora, Texas, on
April 1, 1901, by Sheriff Elijah S. ‘Lige' Briant of Sutton County and his deputies, and is buried there.  I have not attempted
to discover the details of Laura Bullion's family other than her relationship to Viana Byler.  I suspect she had several siblings,
however.  I do not know the McBride name, and I live nearly 200 miles from Conroe.  I suspect the Carolyn McBride who
placed the marker on Laura's grave is or is related to the author of a long article on Laura that appeared in "True West Magazine"
about 1991.  Sincerely  C.F. Eckhardt

Cemetery survey shows a Floyd E. Byler b. 1924 d. 1945. This is same cemetery where Marshal Robert is buried.  Article states
that Marshall received no education as youngster so he went to school with his children at Pearogue School. Elzora:
Elzora Byler was born in Douglas County, Mo., October 28, 1890, and grew up there.
Her father, James Wash Johnson, was of pioneer stock coming from the state of Kentucky.  He met and married Susan Cheney
Johnson, and to this couple were born eleven children.
Seven sons; Johnnie; Jim Will; Granvil; Andy; Ezekiel; Mark; Reilly; and four daughters: Sarah; Rosie; and Elzora and an infant
daughter, deceased.
After the death of Susan Cheney Johnson, James Johnson married Alice Vines Johnson and to this union were born four daughters:
Ellen; Ethel; Ruth, and Mabel; and Alice had a daughter, Cordia, a step-sister to the Johnson's.
Education for the children was gained in Big Springs School, near Silom Springs, Arkansas.  This family moved from Missouri into
the general area around Calico Rock in 1906.
Elzora met Robert Marshal Byler, the son of Alexander and Josie Vent Byler, an Izard couple, and they were married July 12, 1908
by Justice of Peace, John Cooke.
Robert and Elzora lived near Creswell, Arkansas, a thriving railroad town. Farming was a way of life for this young family.
Creswell at this time was a town of Post Office, School, and a huge lumber yard and plainer.
Boswell also a nearby town was a much large community with a post office and boasted three stores, and church school, and many
many residents of the area.
Eleven children were born to the Bylers.  Mr. Robert Byler lived until June 7, 1963.  Except for two trips to Oklahoma, and
sometime living on Red River and time worked in Washington, the Bylers' spent their life here.
An outstanding factor in this family is the multiple occurrence of twins.
Twice twin boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. Byler; twice twins were born to a daughter of the Bylers, and twins are born to a
grandchild of the Bylers' already, with plenty of time to show more.
The United States can be proud of a family as this.  At one time 4 of the Byler sons were serving in the U.S. Armed Forces,

183. Thomas Harvey BYLER, Jr. b. 15 Jun 1878, m. (1) 2 Feb 1899, Alice RAY, m. (2) Lizzie KELLY.  Thomas died __ ___ 1971.
The following from Roger L. Byler's book, page 208: "Thomas Harvey Byler, Jr. married about 1898 (Ihave it from some source
that it was 1899, but think 1898 is probably correct.  It is difficult to get all the minute details correct.)  He married Alice Ray
daughter of William Henry Ray who was a first cousin of the mother of Mrs. Sue Nite Raguzin of Dickinson, Texas who is a
correspondent on both the Byler family and the Harris family.  T.H Byler and Alice Ray had three children, but times were hard
on account of the fued and they sometimes fared poorly.  Then, one morning when he went out of the house, his father-in-law
stepped out from behind a tree with his gun in his hand announcing he was taking his daughter and the children home with him
since Mr. Byler could not feed them.  And he told Mr. Byler that it was no use trying to object as his sons had him in their rifle
sights from behind trees.  Mr. Byler said, "I looked and could see rifles poking out from behind trees on each side of me."  He
lost his wife and children and never got them back.  However, when the children were grown, they recognized him as their father.
This seemed to be a great comfort to him when I visited him at nearly 90 years of age.  Eventually he and Alice Ray were
divorced and he married (2) Lizzie Kelly and had three more children."

186. Marion BYLER b. 18 Oct 1888, West Point, Texas, m. 12 May 1912, Nannie BROWN, (daughter of Sam S. BROWN
and Mary "Molly" COLLINS). Marion died 29 Jun 1963.
From "Jacob Byler of North Carolina" by Roger L. Byler, p 212-213
"Marion and wife lived on a farm between West Point and Muldoon in Fayette County, Texas.  I visited them twice and got a
lot of leads on the family.  He was not as tall as his brother Thomas Harvey Byler, Jr.  Other family members said that Marion did
not like his brother Thomas very much - because his brother could out-talk him.  At any rate, Marion had been with the Border
Patrol and had some tall tales to tell.  Some people think he enlarged them a bit, but he was there during some pretty rough times
and maybe they did not need to be enlarged.
"I am going to try to relate one of the tales as follows:   Marion said that while he was in the Patrol, one of his fellow officers
took offence at something and became a dangerous enemy.  Marion feared for his life.  He figured the other man would take
advantage of a situation in such a way as to get him in some cross-fire and shoot him but making it appear that he was shot by the
bandits they were after.
"Marion took necessary precautions.  He loaded an old blunder-buss of a pistol with rock salt instead of lead, and kept it under
his coat.  So, there came a day when the officers had cornered some outlaws in some old buildings. The Captain gave instructions
as to where each man was to be and the action they were to take.  Marion said he noticed in particular where this man was to be.
Then, he saw that instead of going to his assigned place, he went to a position where he could get behind Marion.  Marion said he
himself went to another location where he could keep an eye on the other man.  Sure enough, when the action started the other
man began to slip along toward where he thought Marion would be.  When the man got almost to the place and was stooped
over so as to slip up on Marion, Marion brought out the old pistol loaded with rock salt and let him have it in the backside.
"Now, I am told that salt shot into the skin burns like fire for a time, but does no real permanent damage.  The man's loud outcry
disrupted the bandit hunt somewhat.  Afterwards, the Captain held a hearing to see what this was all about and why the two men
were not in their assigned positions.  It came out all right for Marion, but the other man spent six weeks in the hospital and was
kicked out of the service.  Afterward, he seemed to hold no grudge against Marion, saying he got what he deserved.
"Marion and his wife were members of the Muldoon Baptist Church.  He was a deacon.

Texas.  Although there is no trace of the town now (1995) it was located four miles northeast of Oenaville and straddled the Bell,
Falls County line.  R. Nesbitt built a gin there in the early 1890's and owned a store.  John W. Gray ran a mercantile store there in
the 1890's.  In 1896 the only business listed in the State Gazetteer was that of Gray & Brightwell, grocers.  Dr. A.H. Alsup, from
Memphis, Tennessee, located his practice at Theo in the spring of 1902.  The rear of Mr. Gray's grocery was used for city hall
meetings.  In 1899 John Gray bought the store of R.H. Nesbitt.
At this time not much more is known about the family of John W. Gray.  The cemetery at what used to be Theo, Texas is
located on the northeast corner of what is called the Theo Loop.  In March of 1995 I visited this cemetery along with Lee Stewart,
who located the cemetery for me.  We found the area unrecognizable as a cemetery.  There was a sign stating that the area was
a wildlife sanctuary.  It was all grown over with scrub trees, vines, etc... The headstones could not be seen from the road.  In the
cemetery we found the gravestones of George Washington Gray and Martha M. (Gray) Johnson along with the headstone of
"Little Eva", a daughter of John W. Gray and his wife Millie. Millie: Another source gives name as Nellie Nickerson.  Birth date
comes from that source.  Have visited cemetery in Theo, Texas and there is a stone that says Eva, daughter of John and Millie Gray.

recognizable as a cemetery.  Sign on the NW corner of the plot says Wildlife Protection Area, or something similar.

Arkansas.
                       Dr. James L. Smith
As the eldest of nine children, Jim from early childhood was obliged to work long and hard on the family farm.  But he dreamed
of better things and a lifetime of service.  In this he was greatly influenced by a family friend, Dr. J.K.P. Black.  Dr. Black spent a
great deal of his free time in the Samuel R. Smith home playing checkers with his friend "Uncle Rutch".  During these visits, Dr. Black
regaled the Smith family with his stories of "kitchen table" surgery and the continous battle he waged with disease and death.
When Jim was in his late teens, the old doctor became his preceptor and took him along on his calls as his assistant whenever
Jim could get away from his farm work.  In 1877, at the age of 21, he began farming for himself in order to obtain the money to
attend medical school.  In 1880 and 1881, he attended his first course of lectures in the Hospital Medical College of Memphis,
Tennessee.  Then in 1881, he began practicing medicine at Oxford continuing until 1887 when he again returned to Memphis
and graduated from that institute in 1888.
James L. Smith married Mary Croom in 1883.  To this marriage five children were born; Robert Oscar, James Erskine,
Bertha (Ferguson), Charles Thurman, and Edna (Powell).
Three of Dr. Jim's sons became doctors.  Robert Oscar and James Erskine became medical doctors and Charles Thurman
became a dental surgeon.  Two grandsons became doctors and one granddaughter became an R.N.
Dr. Jim was married a second time to Betty Whitlow on 02-Dec-1896.  To this marriage two children were born.  A boy
named Orgille and a girl named Avis Edwards.

31 Dec 1947, Violet Hill, Izard County, Arkansas, buried: Violet Hill Cemetery, Izard County, AR.
                    Dr. Jefferson Davis Smith
Jeff was eleven years younger than Dr. Jim who was his idol.  He wanted to follow in his brother's footsteps after attending the
common school at Lunenburg.  But medical school had to wait because his mother was an invalid at this time and he was needed
at home.  So, Jeff became very helpful about the house, helping with all of the household chores and was known to be an excellent
cook.
After the death of his mother in 1890, some of the younger children took over the household chores.  In 1891, Jeff entered
the Memphis Medical School at Memphis, Tennessee.  This was the same school his brother had graduated from three years
before.  Jeff alternated attending school and working.  He graduated on March 29, 1895.
On January 29, 1893, Jeff married Nettie Elizabeth (Betty) Ashley, a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Ashley.  Betty was
born August 10, 1876 at Larkin and died October 22, 1969.
To this marriage, three children were born, Cecil C., Mildred, and Opal. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Jeff opened
his first office at Ash Flat, AR but after a short time moved to Violet Hill where he practiced until his retirement in 1941.  But after the declaration of World War II, he resumed making his calls, saying it was his patriotic duty to serve on the homefront wherever possible.
He continued practicing medicine until his death.
Mildred Billingsley has her father's saddle bags, record books, surgical tools, pictures, etc., which she often exhibits during the
Pioneer Day celebration at Melbourne.  She also remembers the "receipe" for one of his popular a salves.  It was a remedy for
poison ivy, poison oak, insect stings, and minor itches which he called a "whitewash".  It contained sugar of lead, sulphate of zinc,
carbolic acid and water.

                         Dr. John Henry Smith
John Henry was the seventh child of Samuel Rutledge and Jane Smith and the third son to study medicine.  He attended the
common school at Lunenburg and the Philadelphia Academy at Larkin.  He also attended Normals at Melbourne and took the Teacher Examination at which time he received his certificate to teach.  He taught for some time in rural schools in order to earn enough
money to enter Medical College.  In those early days many schools were taught for $20 a month.  Since there was such a large
family, each boy had to earn his own expenses.
He entered the same school his two older brothers had graduated from. After a series of lectures at the Medical College, he
came to Oxford and worked for his brother,  Dr. Jim.  He went back and forth between Oxford and Memphis until he graduated
from Medical College on April 27, 1899.  After graduation, he returned to Oxford and he and his brother, Jim, practiced together.
On December 31, 1899, Dr Henry (as he was always called) married a former pupil, Blanche King, of Violet Hill, Arkansas.
They bought a small house across the street from his brother and in later years this house was remodeled and made into a two-story
dwelling.  He had a small office by his home until 1923 when he built a drug store in Oxford.
Dr. Henry and Blanche were the parents of eight children.  Three children died in infancy.  The five surviving children were,
Alma, Faye, Rex (the only son), Thelma (Bursey), and Lavaun (Conner).
In June, 1928, Dr. Henry bought a home and drug store in Batesville, Arkansas and moved there with his family.  Other than
his practice and drug store, he was County Health Officer.  But Batesville was never home to him, so in June, 1929, he moved
back to Oxford whre he practiced until his death.
Dr. Henry's only son, Rex, was a senior at Arkansas College in Batesville when he died of a heart attack.  He was to have
entered Medical College the next year.
In 1931, Dr. Henry married Lula Jett of Brockwell, Arkansas.  She died in March, 1938.
A year before graduation, Dr. Henry delivered his first baby.  He was Ernest Clinton, a resident of West Plains, Missouri who
was born November 13, 1898.  On the same date, he also delivered Charley White, a resident of Calico Rock, Arkansas.

Informatin on Dr. John Henry Smith was furnished by his daughter Lavaun Conner, 2103 Wedgewood, Springfield, Missouri.

Kenyon, Arkansas, Nettie TUCKER.  Solomon died 21 Sep 1928, The Bottoms, Jackson County, Arkansas.
                         Dr. Solomon W. Smith
Dr. Solomon was the fourth Smith brother to enter the field of medicine. He also attended the common school at Lunenburg,
the Philidelphia Academy, and graduated from the Medical College at Memphis.  But unlike his brothers who practiced in Izard
County, most of his practice was in Jackson county in an area called "the Bottoms".
He was married to Nettie Tucker on December 7th, 1902.  The ceremony was performed in Kenyon, Arkansas by G.B. Borah,
Elder of the Baptist Church.  Sol and Nettie had four children.  The first children were twins, a boy and a girl who died shortly after
birth.  The third child was a boy, Elwin Coe, who lived 18 months.  The fourth child was a girl, Faye.
When Dr. Sol married Nettie Tucker he acquired a ready-made family as Nettie was an orphan with three younger sisters and
two brothers to care for. Dr. Sol reared these children and several orphans they took into thier home.
One of Dr. Sol's granddaughters followed the family tradition by becoming a dental hygienist and married a doctor.
