TRAGEDY ON PINE CREEK OVER FAMILY AFFAIR
M.H. Sims of Hugo, Ok., a former resident of Lamar county, was killed about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon [Sep. 11, 1917]
at the home of his son-in-law, J.S. Landers, between eight and nine miles northeast of Paris on the D.S. Hammond farm on Pine Creek.
The tragedy was the result of family trouble which resulted in the separation of Mr. Landers and his wife a year or two ago and the
institution of a divorce suit by Mr. Landers, which is still pending. Two of the children, boys six and eight years old, are staying
with their father and the mother has possession of three of them.  The two little boys were the only eye witnesses to the killing.
According to the statement of Mr. Landers the deceased arrived at his home from Hugo in a jitney with two men who put him out
at John Irwin's, half a mile from where Landers lived, and drove away about 1:30 o'clock.  He and his two little boys were were in
the field picking cotton and the deceased went to where they were and drew a pistol and made him shed his cotton sack and
march infront of him at the point of the pistol to Marvin Bailey's, a neighbor living about a quarter of a mile from his home.  When
he reached Mr. Bailey's the deceased stopped to talk to the latter's wife and while he was talking to her Landers gave him the slip
and went around the house and across the field to  his home.
When the deceased got through talking to Mrs. Bailey and discovered that he was gone he went to Irwin's in search of him,
but failing to find him, then went to his home, Landers stated that when he saw the deceased coming he got his shotgun and
sat out in the hall to protect himself, and that the deceased approached the house from the back way and came around the
smokehouse with his pistol in his hand.  As soon as he turned the corner of the smokehouse in view of the gallery Landers fired
at him with a shotgun loaded with No. 6 shot.
Only one barrel was discharged while he was about ten steps away and the contents took effect in the lower part of his
face and neck and all over the breast.  The deceased turned and walked five or six steps and fell and expired.  The two
little boys of Mr. Landers were standing in the road near the house when the shot was fired.
As soon as the shooting occured Landers got his neighbors, Bailey and Irwin. to notify Sheriff Clarkson, who went out
to the place accompanied by Deputy Sheriff McDonald and County Attorney Grady Sturgeon, and they found him at home waiting
to surrender, he claiming self-defense.  Sheriff Clarkson brought the body of Mr. sims to Paris in his automobile and turned
it over to Emberson & Brown, undertakers, who notified his wife.
The examining trial of the defendant will be held before Justice of the Peace Jay Hall at 8 o'clock this......

MRS. JOHN HAYDEN From Wednesday's daily
Mrs. John Hayden, aged 32 years, passed away Wednesday morning at 6:20 o'clock at St. Luke's Hospital at Little Rock, to which place she had been removed recently for treatment, following an illness of a few week's duration at the family home in East Newport.
The body will be brought to Newport from Little Rock tonight at 8:30 and taken to the family residence.  Complete funeral arrangements have not been made, but it was announced that burial would take place tomorrow at Walnut Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Hayden is survived by her husband, who is a member of the firm of Hayden-Holloway Furniture Company, and three children, all of whom have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.  Mrs. Hayden was born and reared at Mountain View, being a member of the Hixon family, one of the best known and most highly respected famlies of Stone county.  She moved to Newport several years ago with her husband, and since her residence here she came to be loved by all who knew her because of her splendid character and ideal traits of womanhood.  She was a devout member of the Baptist church and the institution will greatly miss her attendance and service.

                               MRS. JOHN HAYDEN
We are very sad to announce the death of our dear sister, Mrs. Nellie Hayden, wife of John Hayden of Newport, who died early Wednesday morning at St. Luke's Hospital in Little Rock.
She had been confined to her bed for about two weeks, with something like a nervous collapse and was taken to Little Rock Sunday for treatment, but continued to grow worse until the end.  The doctors at Little Rock made an examination after her death and found that she had a tumor of the brain, which caused a derangement of the nervous system and was the direct cause of her death.
Sister Nellie was a good christian woman, a member of the Baptist Church of Newport, and loved by all who knew her.  Words fail us to describe how pure and sweet she was, and none know this to be true, more than the writer, her brother.  We hardly realize how dear our loved ones are to us, until they are taken from us.  We can have no doubt that she has now gone to her reward.
Her remains were shipped to Newport Wednesday, and funeral services were conducted at the family residence, Thursday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. Gibson, after which she was buried at Walnut Grove cemetery, Newport.
She is survived by her husband, three small children, Doris, aged 8, John Jr., aged 3, and Helen, aged 7 months, her Mother, Mrs. Mary Hixon of this place (Mt. View), two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Maud McClure of Mission, Texas, Mrs. Sepha Chambers and H.E. Hixon, both of this place (Mt. View).
Little sister is gone but will not be forgotten.  The remembrance of her dear face and pure sweet young life will be cherished by us until we to shall receive the summons of God, and pass to the Great Beyond, where we expect to see Nellie again.
