History

Age: 18    Height: 6'1"    Weight: 160 lbs    Eyes: Brown    Hair: Blue

He was born to John and Mary McClain somewhere in northern Michigan...

His father, John, served as a National Parks Service Ranger, police division (yes there is such a thing, they're the rangers who carry the guns and actually are police officers--i.e. can make arrests and stuff).  One day, while on patrol, he rescued a wolf from a bear trap (the trap was there illegally, and John later caught the poachers, not that it matters here).  After that, John noticed the wolf sort of followed him around.  At first, it was a little weird, but John eventually accepted it.  Soon, the wolf was really a companion--staying in the house, helping him hunt...
Eventually John met Mary, a woman who claimed she was from one of the local towns.  Mary was actually a werewolf, the wolf John had befriended.  Since she already knew all about him from spending so much time together, they fell in love quickly and got married.  John began to see less and less of his wolf companion, but more and more of Mary, and never noticed it enough to really think about it.

One day, Derrick was born.

Shortly after, when Derrick was about 4 or 5, Mary was killed by a pack of wolves (Garou) while John and Derrick watched.  John tried to fend them off with his rifle but was less than successful (he was using normal bullets, they were Spirals...you do the math).  Running out of bullets (and Derrick's air gun being also useless), John pulled out a knife (Klaive) that his wife gave him as a present years ago, and went at the wolves.  They went running, but not before they dragged Mary off with them.  Derrick and John both assumed she was dead.  Her body was never recovered, but it is a vast wilderness.  Derrick has had a strong fear of wolves and large dogs ever since.
Anyway, Derrick grew up as an unofficial forest ranger.  His dad eventually went on to become a big shot in the Park Service, but still lived in northern Michigan.  Derrick learned to hunt, fish, trap, handle firearms, cook and clean deer and animals, and all sorts of outdoors survival stuff.  He would often accompany his dad and the other rangers on patrols or operations.
When he was 16, his dad decided he needed to get more of an education and go to college.  The plan was to send Derrick to his Uncle James in Detroit, where he could go to school.  Uncle James, a police captain, took Derrick in.  Derrick owns a few rifles and a handgun which he uses for hunting, fishing rods, camping gear, climbing gear--he's a very happy, free-spirited guy.  He planned to go to college part-time, get a degree in environmental science, then (or simultaneously) become a park ranger, or work for the EPA or something as an undercover investigator.  He first planned to join the Detroit police force, partly  because of his Uncle, and partly because he needs to earn his money somehow and knows he can get in.  He gets around in a 4x4, an old, beat up Ford pick-up truck.
Before he left for Detroit, his father gave him a special knife that he said his mother wanted to have, when he was old enough.  "Around 18" is when his mother said.  The knife (Derrick's Klaive) is a matching one to his father's.
The year he spent in Detroit (before turning 18) he spent riding around with Detroit cops (thanks to his uncle).  He's spent his life around criminals and cops.  He has occasionally 'worked' for the Detroit cops undercover, acting as a gang member, drug addict...whatever.  He knows his way around the wilderness and the city, but he's not comfortable in the city.  He'll be happy when he can leave (after his education).

(Derrick's First Change forced him to confront his mother.  After the Spiral attack Mary decided that leaving her family was the only way to protect them.  She returned when Derrick changed, and he refused to believe that she was real, that a mother could abandon her child.  He was also forced to confront his fear of wolves, especially with Walks in his Pack and several lupus Elders.  With the death of his Uncle, he found his calling in fighting vampires.
Derrick is the epitome of the reluctant Garou, refusing to respect his Alpha or anyone else.  Most of the Sept seems quite ready to toss him out on his ear, and the patience of his packmates is wearing thin.  He prefers to spend most of his time in Pangaea, and has recently left for Vancouver to spend more time with his father and get reacquainted with his mother.  It is uncertain wether he will return, or instead become a permanent resident of Pangaea.---Kelly, the Webmistress)

In the Eyes of Others

"A waste of Gnosis. Why he was Chosen is beyond me."

Cry of Winds, Alpha of the Ice Knife Pack

"Like most men, he can't handle authority when he's not the one in charge. If he doesn't get a clue soon, he'll end up dead. Too bad. But, if he gets someone else killed first... Well, I guess he'll still end up dead."

Madonna Backhand, Alpha of the Streetlight Prowlers

"The humans have lost their connection to Gaia. It makes them weak whenever they venture out of the Weaver's web and makes them easy prey for the Wyrm. This one is my proof if you doubt me."
