Who may attend Park West High School

Counseling and Guidance Program

Mrs. Hardy
School Counselor

The counseling and guidance program is an integral part of the total school educational program and is unique in that it begins before the student arrives at Park West High School. Prior to registration, students cumulative records are reviewed by the counselor, and an initial assessment is made of student needs, which is the beginning of a continuous process while the student is attending Park West High School. The program is designed to meet the personal, social, and educational/career needs of the student.

Community Outreach

Orientation

The course is designed to acquaint new students with Park West High School. Emphasis is on location of classrooms, rules and school policies, graduation requirements and how to contact staff members who can help students.

Re-admission to comprehensive High School

A student who has voluntarily transferred to Park West High School has the option of returning to the comprehensive high school at the beginning of the following semester. A student who has involuntarily transferred to Park West High School is given semester and yearly reviews for consideration for return to regular high school. Students are advised at appropriate times to fill out a request form for re-admission. The Transfer Committee either approves or disapproves the transfer request. A student must meet the requirements of satisfactory attendance, citizenship and academic progress in order to return.

ASB "on the move"

ASB Advisor Ms. Skeete
Prior to 1998 the Park West ASB program was a part-time program where students were pulled out of class to work on projects on a per diem basis. Now the program is 20 students strong earning class credit and working on student government 4th period.

Technology Corner

Mr. Perez 1998 - ? Technology Coordinator

The state awarded PWHS the Digital High School grant. The DHS program is designed to bring technology resources to high school campuses all over the state. The first year is the installation year. PWHS received $67,500. In that year we spent about 2/3 of the funding on new equipment and installation. We purchased 50 multi-media computers, 18 printers and 9 scanners. Year two was set aside for staff members to be trained on their PC’s and to begin using the technology for classroom management. Year three is designed to incorporate lesson plans into the use of technology. Each year the state has ear marked $45 per student to help maintain the program for upgrades and faculty support.

NePez BBQ

Every other Friday Park has a BBQ. This program was started 3 years ago by Mrs. Nemer and Mr. Lopez and has been a valuable part of PW life. Students on time to their first class of the day get a Lopez dollar. Five Lopez dollars can be redeemed on Friday for FREE BBQ lunch.

Peer Counseling and Teen Court

Park West has a peer counseling program that has been active for almost 3 years.  Students are trained on how to counsel other students and learn something about themselves along the way.  Teen Court is a dynamic idea from the great minds of the peer resource program at PUSD. Teens charged with minor crimes are brought before a 5 man teen jury.  This jury renders a verdict and hands out sentencing.

Peer Theater

Peer theater uses topics students want to learn about and takes them to another level.  By producing drama on social issues students learn about them and also draw conclusions on how these topics fit into their lives.

PWHS Sports?

It was only 1997 that PWHS had the opportunity to provide students with PE.  Now we have some after school sports...competing with other continuation high school locally.
