 | As you grow from childhood into an adult your tastes change, your likes change and your loves change. One love that has remained in my life from childhood has been my love of lions. As a child I dreamed of having a lion of my very own when I grew up. As an adult common sense and knowledge kicked in and I knew that lions should stay as they were meant to be, born free and living free. |
 | I take no credit for any of the following pictures or facts shown on this page. It was because of the work of some dedicated people that I was able to find some wonderful pictures and collect some facts about something that I love. I have displayed them on this page for both yours as well as my pleasure. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do. |
 | Lions are the only wild cat that lives in a large group. This is called a pride. The pride consists of anywhere from 2 to 18 females and 1 to 7 males. Females and their offspring make up the basis of the pride. The females are usually all related, Mothers, Daughters, Aunts and Cousins and generally live together their entire lives. |
 | Males leave the pride about 21/2 to 3yrs. of age at their Mother's insistence. They then form a coalition and seek to take over a new pride. Males in this coalition don't usually fight each other as they are generally related. They will however fight strange males. The pride is
overthrown as frequently as every 3yrs.. |
 | When a new male or males take over a pride the overthrown male is often killed or hurt badly enough that he dies shortly there after. One fact that isn't mentioned often and I tend to over look because it's the one aspect that I'm not fond of about lions. The reining male or males will kill the young cubs of the overthrown male. He will then mate with the females of the pride and the stronger genes will rein thus the survival of the pride will continue. |
 | A pride's territory is between 40 and 50 square miles. Both the male and females defend the territory although the male is more aggressive. The male is dominant over all in the pride but the female is in charge of most of the goings on in the pride. She finds water, moves the pride, decides where they will sleep and the females do most of the hunting. |
 | A lion's prey range in size from 100 to 1000 lbs. and consist of Zebra, buffalo, wild boars, wildebeest, giraffe, impala and other antelope. Lions hunt in groups. The first team circles and the second team scares and chases the prey into the first group. The lion hunts by stalking the prey, gets within 30 to 60 ft. the rush and leaps. If the prey isn't caught within 150 to 330 ft. they tire and give up. Only 1 of 4 hunts are successful but when it is the dominant male eats first, the lionesses next and the cubs get the scraps and leftovers. |
 | The gestation period of the lioness is between 98 and 105 days. Lionesses frequently enter the breeding season together, give birth at the same time and share nursing and maternal duties. The litter is between 1 and 5 cubs. |
 | Lion cubs weigh about 5lbs. at birth and nurse for 8 months. They have spots on their backs as well as their bellies that disappear as they age. Cubs are dependent on the adults until they are about 16 months old. They do however join the hunt at about 11 months. They aren't able to survive on their own until about the age of 2yrs.. |
 | Here's some last little tid bits that I thought were interesting. Male lion's manes are status symbles, the largest mane wins, so to speak. It starts growing at about age 2 and is a dominante feature in the African lion. The Asian lion also have a mane although it's not as obvious as the African lion's mane. His mane also serves as a protective feature during a fight with another male. |
 | A lion can reach speeds of 30 mph for short stretches A lion's prey can be as large as 3 times is size. Lion's greet each other by rubbing each other much like domestic cats. A lion needs to eat 11 lbs. of meat a day to survive. A lion rests most of the day, about 19hrs. a day. A lion's roar can be heard up to 5 miles away. |
 | Both the Asian and the African lion is on the decline. The main cause of this decline is habitat destruction. Many lions have been killed because they are perceived as a threat to domestic animals by farmers. There are only about 200 Asian lions left n India, probably less.

 | The lion is called the King of the beasts. Wouldn't it be sad if suddenly he no longer existed due to man's need to have more and the animals have less? |
