The Belted Kingfisher is a small bird indigenous to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. As the name implies, the Belted Kingfisher is a superb fisherman without peer. Upon spying a potential meal, this agile bird will hover above the water for a few seconds, then quickly dive headfirst to seize an unsuspecting fish. A solitary bird that normally avoids people, the Belted Kingfisher resides around wetlands and saltwater estuaries.
