The Team
Formed: 1990, ACJC
The
Dragonfly Football Club was
formed in 1990 by 6 aspiring students from the Anglo Chinese
Junior College, who apart from studying "hard", were drawn
together by their passion for soccer, in particular, court
soccer. Other than Bernard, the rest were already playing
good high level soccer even during their Fairfield Methodist
days.
The name of the club evolves from the fact that all the
players, at one time or another, wore the Dragonfly brand
school shoes. Although just a simple pair of school shoes,
it was extremely comfortable to the feet and its side
grooves provided excellent control. Through the many matches
played, the shoes proved their worth and as a tribute,
the players decided to name the team after the same name.
The players has of course gone on to use other more sophisicated
and expensive shoes, but the Dragonfly name will always
serve as a reminder of the humble and simple beginings
of the club.
Over the last 11 years, the club has played hundreds of
games and has played with different teams comprising of
players from all ages and nationalities. The number of
matches played however has been reduced significantly
over the last 2-3 years as it has become hard to find
worthy opponents. As each player also holds a full time
job, it is also difficult to organise games with short
notices.
Through the years, the club has also imported foreign
talents along the way. One such talent was a player called
Swee Yam, who impressed the team during his short trial.
However when the contract was finally offered to him,
he snubbed the lucrative deal of 10 bananas a season for
a boring, low paying pilot job. Other notable guest players
include, JianCong, Joo Yang and Marcus who stand in for
the "zoo loving" Simon in the most recent game.
In recent games against arch-rivals Butterflies, the club
has been consistently winning hands down.
The club has
come a long way over the last 11 years, going through
tough times and good. Though no longer the young vibrant
team that it used to be, its strong spirit of friendship,
drive and common identity in Christ has grown much stronger.
Joseph Leow
Striker, 33, Self Employed
A
prolific striker with a proven track record, Joseph's
ball skills and eye for goal has dazzled many and is a
constant thorn in the flesh of opposing players. His consistent
form is probably one of the main reasons for the club's
success all these years. A natural clown, he is also the
captain and manager of the club.

Marcus Chua
Attacking
Midfielder, 32, IBM
The midfield
general of the team. This ex-commando is basically the
engine behind the team. Lethal in attack, stout in defence,
he is easily the fittest member in the team. On the pitch,
he is always in the thick of the action. Was formerly
the manager of the club, but stepped down due to some
disagreement over banana payments.

Bernard
Gan Midfield,
32, Property
Playing
on the left, this dribbling wizard would often leave his
opponents and sometimes teammates in his wake as he dribbles
from defence to attack to score. So intense is his dribbling
that he would sometimes even dribble to the next court
without knowing. Packs a powerful left foot that would
terrorize opposing defence when he ramps the ball.

Irwin
Wong Defensive
Midfield, 32, Singapore Technologies
One
of the most versatile player in the team, simply because
he injures very easily and is very prone to leg cramps.
Hence he would switch play position according to the extent
of his injury. On a good day however, he forms an effective
partnership with Marcus in midfield and supplies important
passes to Joseph to finish them off. This "cramp king"
is also the webmaster of the site.

Simon
Tham Defender,
32, Property
The
joker of the team. His timely jibes and corny remarks
bring much freshness and laughter on and off the pitch.
The biggest laughter would often be when the joke is on
himself. Usually plays in defence, but is equally comfortable
going up to support in attack. He is also the sensitive
new age guy of the group…a lot of "feelings" in this man.

Ong
Chin Hwee Defender,
32, DBS
This
tall, lanky defender is literally the defence pillar of
the team as he is very often the "last man standing" when
the rest of his teammates can't make it back to defend
on time. Strong in the air, he has also popped in to score
couple of goals from his head. Chin Hwee is currently
busy preparing for his coming wedding in October.
