Chapter Three

Stella jumped and wrenched her eyes away from the clear blue sky with a jolt. "What?" she asked the teacher, still half bemused by her thoughts.

"What were we talking about, Stella? The sour faced teacher, Mrs. Humphrey inquired sarcastically, staring down from her great height like a huge, scowling mountain. Wrapped up in the fleeting remains of her daydream, Stella told the absolute truth.

" I have no idea, Mrs. Humpy." She realized her compound mistake, but too late… the teacher was advancing.

"What? And why don't you have any idea, Stella? Don't you find my class interesting?"

Stella squirmed uncomfortably in her seat. " I guess I wasn't paying attention," she mumbled, embarrassed.

The teacher, however, took no note of this response, already deep in an obviously well rehearsed tirade.

"Do you think that just because this is the last day of school, you can slack off? No! You will never stop learning… She rambled on. Stella looked up, happy the teacher's attention was no longer fixed on her, and was poked in the back. Discreetly she put her arm back to get the note from Kay, and read it with a smile. Then she cautiously tossed it across the aisle to her other friend, Pyrene. The plump girl grinned sympathetically then made a puppet with her hand, mouthing 'Blah, blah blah."

Stella stifled a giggle. Suddenly, she got another poke in the back. She turned to see that Mrs. Humphrey was again standing in front of her. She grimaced. The teacher, however, was focusing on Pyrene across the aisle.

"What is it you have here?" the teacher asked maliciously. She took the note from the girl's unresisting fingers and read. "Well now that is interesting. Planning for summer already?" she smiled humorlessly. Pyrene was wincing and looking at the bottom of the note. Oh no! Stella could see through the paper to the signature at the bottom: Kay.

"Kay:" the teacher turned to face the girl behind Stella. "I wouldn't have expected this of you." Stella knew, without even turning, that her friend looked mortified. "Well, I would hate to derail your plans, but... it appears you need to be reminded of authority. Go to the library after school. You have 30 minutes detention.

"But!" Pyrene choked on the word. It was sunny outside and the day was hot as usual. People were working in the fields, some resting under a tree to hide from the suns hot ray, and kids were running out of school for the last day of school was here. Summer vacation finally came to them and everyone wanted to go out and have some fun. All the kids were already out of school except for the 3 girls.

Kay, Pyrene and Stella were sitting in the hot library, mad and extremely bored. Whenever they said a word the teacher started yelling at them.

"This really sucks!!!" whispered Stella.

"Agreed… Of course! Only time in our entire lives that we write notes in class, and we get caught! And it would be Mrs. Humpy." All the girls giggled at their despised teacher's nickname. "And on the last day, sure… only she would be so cruel!" continued Pyrene, warming to her subject.

"Hey, you three quit talking or you'll have another hour of detention," says Mrs. Humphrey in her deep annoying voice that no kid could ever stand. Pyrene turned and scowled in the direction of the voice, then turned back to the other girls.

"How about we just ignore her," whispered Pyrene, then she added "So what do you guys want to do after we wake up from this nightmare?"

"How about we go somewhere far away from here!!" said Stella, half laughing.

"What do you think Kay?" asked Pyrene.

"I don't care, whatever you guys like," said Kay.

"Just get me out of here… before I do something I might regret." Pyrene grinned impishly. "After all, I'm sure she doesn't need me to point out that she has hair growing out of the warts on her chin… it's rather noticeable! But then again, with her… you never know!" Everyone laughed quietly, then returned to the question at hand.

"How about we go somewhere by the stream and cool off, I am going to die from this heat," said Stella.

"That would be ok, or we can go and visit Lakesha, " said Kay.

"Sure… sounds great. Anything and anywhere but here. I mean, I love libraries most of the time… but now, I think I'd rather absorb fresh air than knowledge."
