Chapter Four

Kay threw her long, blonde hair over her shoulder and sighed. It was finally the last day of school. Then she and her two friends would have the entire summer to do whatever they wanted. She pulled up her long blue skirt so she wouldn't trip and walked to her class. She walked through the clusters of kids and took in her surroundings. Some kids totally ignored her as she walked by. Others glanced and then looked away. It was a busy building and Kay had grown to like it. The halls and rooms were sort of a yellow or even an orange color, which let a person feel comfortable.

"Yes! We are DONE!" Pyrene happily yelled. Kay smiled. She was so fond of her two best and only friends. All three of them were pretty, in their own ways, and had long, somewhat curly hair. Pyrene's hair was brown, while Kay's was blonde. Stella, the third of the threesome, had black hair and pale green eyes. She added, "We made it. Now we have all summer to do anything we feel like."

They were heading back towards their village, where they knew Lakesha would be waiting. Lakesha was the villages' medicine lady. Everyone knew who she was and came to ask her for help.

Lakesha was old, and had long, white hair and soft, wrinkled skin. Everything about her was pleasant and all three of the sixteen year olds' liked her. She was the person who took care of them, ever sense they were found, seemingly abandoned, outside the village, on the edge of the forest.

Lakesha gasped. She had felt it again, a coldness in the air. Not the coldness that came with winter but the type of coldness that evil brought. It had grown lately; each day had more of it. Whatever it was. The entire village seemed to have changed slightly, everyone seemed a little bit angrier, a little sadder... It all was connected to the evil that was slowly pouring in.

She closed her eyes to calm herself. Slowly she pieced through everything she knew but came up with no solutions. Feeling, however, more relaxed she prepared food for when the children came home.
When she had finished cooking, she heard them walking toward the hut. They were excited, like she had expected them to be on their last day of school. Lakesha thought about the full summer where they had nothing to do. She wondered what she would do with them. Perhaps she would try to teach them some of the things about themselves, and about her. They seemed ready. She remembered Kay's complaining about how 'everyone was being grumpy lately'. Lakesha herself hadn't felt grumpy, angry, or sad. Just tired. But she wasn't really from here... Then again, neither were they. She would tell them today, what she knew; she had waited long enough.
