The Teflon Sword
"End to the Boredom"

It was a day like the day before. Neon Glass, a tall human girl in her early twenties, started her daily routine. She awoke to the sound of the buzzing alarm clock that her mother had given her. Neon groaned as she rolled out of bed. Thud! She promptly fell on the floor.

"Ow, not again."she mumbled as she reached up to shut off the source of her annoyance.

Wearily she stood up and walked to the bathroom. The shower always seemed to wake her up, but not by much. Comfortable clothes were her normal attire. She slipped on jeans and her favorite t-shirt.

"Boy, am I glad this shirt was clean."She said, taking a sniff just in case.

Neon walked to her twelfth story window. As she looked out several faries darted by. One fairy stopped a moment, peered in, and in a cheery voice said, "Good Morning."

Neon grumbled, she didn't like morning people. Faries always appeared to be too happy, especially in the morning.

Locking her door, she noticed an ugly little troll across the hall locking his. Neon thought nothing of it.

"Morning, Ms. Glass."

"Morning, Mr. Krod." She replied.

She wandered down the hallway to the elevators. When she got in she saw several frogs on the floor. Almost in unison, they were saying, "A witch, a witch, a witch lives on the thirteenth floor!"

"Well, duh!" was her response, "everyone knows that."

The elevator doors opened. Neon stepped out as others stepped in. Behind her she could hear the frogs shouting at the new passengers. Then the doors closed and she could hear them no more.

Once outside, Neon spotted a dog-headed man sitting by the side of the building. She dropped a quarter in his cup and walked on by. Down on the street corner was a cafe. This was the first stop of her morning routine.

She walked out of the cafe with her large cup of coffee."Now I can wake up", she thought.

She took a sip from the steamy cup and hailed a cab. The cab had a slight odor of sulphur. Neon didn't care, she just sipped her hot coffee. "The park", she said to the horned driver.

The second stop on her morning routine was a walk through the park zoo. Neon always stopped to look at the unicorns. The unicorns pranced around in their usual way, nothing exciting. Neon just sipped her coffee and leaned on the fence.

She began to take another sip when she heard a voice. "Beautiful creatures, aren't they", said the voice.

"They look the same as yesterday",she paused,"and the day before."

"Why do you return if they are always the same?"

"Eh, something to look at."

"Then", said the voice, "you are in desperate need of my help."

"What, you a shrink or something?"

The voice laughed. "Possibly the 'or something', Neon Glass."

At the sound of her name, Neon spun around. She was shocked at the sight of a wizard standing before her. For a moment she couldn't speak, and then, "um....uh..a wizard?, wants to help...me?", She droped her coffee on the ground, spilling it every which way. Almost oblivious to the spill,"uh..why?".

"Or perhaps", The wizard said, wiping the coffee from his cloak without much success, "I should say, I need your help."

"With that stain?"

The wizard laughed. "No, not with this stain; with a quest, an adventure."

"Wow, Really?", then confused, she asked, "why me?"

"You would rather continue to live your redundant existance?"

"No, of course not. I just never thought I'd ever be asked on a quest. I...wait a second, is this some kind of scam?"

"Quite on the contrary, this adventure will cost you nothing. My client pays for everything."

"So it's not just me on your quest. um, how many?"

"Six."

"Huh?"

"Six others will be joining you on this quest, which makes you number seven."

"Does that make me lucky?"

"No", the wizard replied, "that makes you number seven."

Neon chuckled nervously, "uh,ok?"

"The only thing I ask in return is five percent of your share of the treasure at the end of the quest."

"But you said it will cost me nothing."

"We have to make a profit somehow."

"What if there is no treasure at the end?"

"Then I ask nothing of you. It's as simple as that."

Neon thought for a moment. "Do I need to bring anything?", She asked.

"You must purchase yourself a sword." The wizard handed Neon a card, "You will meet at Joe's Pizza Place, tomorrow afternoon at approximately Two o'clock."

"Why there? And what's this card for?"

"It is my client's choice to meet there and this is my business card.", he said, growing a little perturbed. "Now don't loose it! You may find it useful."

In a flash of blinding light and a puff of white smoke the wizard was gone. Neon shoved the card in her back pocket. She turned around to look at the unicorns one last time. "Well you guys, looks as if my luck has changed. Time to say goodbye to this boring life!", she paused, "Ha! Finally, An adventure!", and with that she ran off to catch the next cab.

Her coffee remained, spilled on the ground, under the upside-down cup.
