NEWCASTLE'S Chinese community is searching for new business
opportunities and jobs thanks to the Dragon Project.
The initiative is being established with £50,000 from the Grainger
Town Project and is managed by local enterprise agency, Entrust.
Chinese businesspeople with viable ideas can develop them with expert
information, support and training from Entrust staff.
And existing businesses seeking to diversify into fresh activities can
also tap into the advice and help.
The 7,000-strong Chinese community took action because it was
increasingly concerned about it being vulnerable because it was focused
mainly on food.
Dragon Project manager Tony Yau said: "Everyone knows what a great
place Stowell Street is to go for a night out, but our aim is to ensure
there is a broader base for the community here in Newcastle."
And Councillor Tony Flynn, the leader of Newcastle City Council and
chairman of the Grainger Town Partnership, said: "The Chinese
community brings so much vitality and life to the city, and we're looking
at ways we can expand this energy"
The Partnership was established in 1997 to revitalise 90-acres of
Newcastle containing many listed buildings.
More than £40m has been invested and over the next four years it aims
to support some 2,000 new jobs, help start 200 businesses, and fund the
development of more than 500 flats.
