Now with
that out of the way, let's go on to what I consider to be the second most
important aspect of an mmorpg, etiquette.
There are several common sense rules that you should follow when you are
starting out and trying to get to know people and the game itself, these
are not game rules, just rules that will help keep you alive and help keep
other players from killing you over something that they deem as rude
-
Do not
beg for items or gold, this is not tolerated on any server by anyone really.
If you are having difficulty earning enough money to purchase better equipment
then a more appropriate way to ask for something would be to request that
someone help you out with what you are doing to make money. For instance
if you are a miner/smelter/smith..."Excuse me I see that you are
a miner as well, I've tried my hand at mining and have found that it is
not very profitable for me, would you be kind enough to give me some tips
to help me out?" or if you are a warrior, "I've been killing
bats all day and I can't seem to make any money off of them, and the spiders
just keep killing me. Is there anyone here available to go on a hunt with
me so that we can all make a profit?" You will be surprised how many
people will take time out to help you IF you ask politely.
- Do not help in a fight
that you are not requested to help with. When you see someone surrounded
by 20 spiders and they are battling for their life, do not just run up and
start helping. The person may want that many spiders on them and if you
take them from him, he may just kill you for it. This type of behavior is
known as "experience vulting" and is generally not tolerated by
those trying to reach the next level. You may however, ask "You ok?"
or "Need help?" etc...if the person does not answer, do not assume
that they need help. If you see them fight an opening and then start running
away from them, then you may help.
- If you see a dead person
on the ground do not go near it. After a body has been on the ground for
a certain period of time, it is possible to steal items off of the body.
If you are standing next to a body of someone you do not know, when that
person or his friends arrive, you are likely to be killed over it. If you
wish to stay near to help protect the body, stay at least 2 or 3 steps away
so that whomever may approach knows you are not attempting to steal.
- If you see a person fighting
and walking and stepping away from several creatures and they hit again
and step away, they are conserving potions. They are not running, if they
kill a creature they are fighting, stay away from the body, it is not yours
to loot. Do not help the person unless they request it or you ask first.
- Be courteous when you
speak, and don't use numbers to speak. This is a medieval role playing game,
speak as if you are in that time period. That does not mean that you have
to speak olde english, you can speak your regular language, but be polite,
don't call people names or use profanity to excess, this will only make
people not want to be around you.
- If you request someone
in a guild to join their guild and they tell you what you have to do, then
do what they say. Do not follow them begging them constantly. If the person
tells you that they don't have time to speak right now, then leave them
alone and go to the message board and leave them a message there. Most guilds
have a post under guild chat on the forums.
These suggestions are just
a few things that will help you to become a well liked and respected member
of the community. Even if you choose to play an evil character, following
these rules will still keep you respected. Again they are not rules of the
game itself, just a little game etiquette. There are many other etiquette
rules that I will cover in other guides, such as hunting. Basically just use
your common sense, think about how you sound to the the other person, and
if it's something you wouldn't tolerate from someone else then don't say it.
