Current Practicing Facilities

Please check out my NEW FACILITIES page. There are pictures of the building, each treatment room, and the waiting areas.

Hours of Operation

Hours are currently by appointment only. I am currently available for appointment Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, Friday and Saturday I will be available only until 5 p.m.
House calls are also possible, at an increased rate (please see fee schedule below) and there must be another person present at your home during the treatment.

Directions

Not When The Surf's Up Acupuncture Clinic is very conveniently located just off of Seventh Street on Beaumont Avenue. Beaumont is between Independence and Hawthorne, on the right side of the street and just after Louise avenue if you are heading towards town (away from Lupie's/Monroe Rd.)

408 Beaumont is the first building after the corner and shares a parking area with the Elizabeth Arms on the corner of Seventh and Beaumont. If the parking area is full, Beaumont also has on-the-street parking available.

We are in Suite 9 (although there are only 4 units in my building, it confuses me too!) and are located on the first floor, on the right hand side of the building (as you are looking from the street.)

Fee Schedule as of October 1, 2002

Below is a listing of some of the primary services available, along with pricing. Because I am not currently operating at full hours with a facility all to myself, I am extending a 20% discount off the posted fee. Hopefully this will compensate for any inconvenience.

Fee Schedule
Initial Diagnosis and Treatment (About 1.5 hours) $80
Subsequent Treatment Sessions (About 1 hour each) $60
Herbal Consultation only (.5 hour)* $30
Herbs, granular extract ~$30, two week supply
At Home Treatment $150, stipulations apply

*Does not include the price of the herbs.

Treatment sessions may consist of acupuncture, therapeutic massage, injury rehabilitation exercises, and/or herbal consultation. The rate is standard regardless of which services are requested or rendered. People who are not ready for needles: you are welcome to come on in, I have treatment modalities other than Acupuncture that can help your conditions.

Effectivity / Safety Issues

If you would like to learn more about Chinese Medicine and what it can do for you, I would recommend my Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology pages. For another's point of view, the Acupuncture.com page is very informative.

Advice for the 1st Time Patient

What to Wear
Many constitutional treatments can be done primarily with the points on the arms, legs, and back; therefor, it is best to wear loose fitting clothes that can be rolled up to the knees and elbows.

If other points are to be involved, a patient may be asked to partially disrobe (privately, of course) and lay under a clinic blanket. The blanket will only be moved to expose the direct needling areas, then replaced. Should the patient prefer to wear a hospital style gown, they are provided by the clinic.

Eat Something
It is not uncommon for patients to get slightly faint during the first treatment. There is very little concern about safety, as you will be laying down and undersupervision should this happen. Should this occur, it nearly always passes within a minute or two.

If you come in on an empty stomach there is a higher chance of this slightly uncomfortable sensation arising. Eating a snack, preferably something with protien, will help considerably. Should you forget to eat something, I usually have some kind of healthy snack laying around the office, so it shouldn't be a problem!

Take a Walk
As mentioned on my
Acupuncture page, treatments tend to be so relaxing that many patients fall asleep on the table! Even if you don't fall asleep, a deep level of relaxation after the treatment can hinder your ability to drive safely (especially in 7th street traffic!) Again, this sensation of "grogginess" passes, just as it does when you wake up in the morning. Therefor, I recommend to anyone feeling a little TOO relaxed after a treatment to take a walk around the block or through the park across the street before hopping in the car and zooming into traffic.

Arbitration and Informed Consent Forms
It is now standard practice in alternative health clinics to require new patients to sign these forms. As a matter of fact, my malpractice insurance company extends a SUBSTANTIAL discount to ALL their practitioners who utilize these forms. I will not treat anyone who refuses to sign these forms, as I will not be covered in event of a lawsuit.

The informed consent form simply states that you are aware that I will be using needles as well as other modalities to treat you, and that although an accident is rare, it is possible.

The arbitration agreement simply states that should you decide to sue a practitioner for any reason involving malpractice, you must use arbitration. Arbitration does NOT take away your right to sue! It simply means that you would both present your cases to a judge or panel of judges (often retired), who would then make a LEGALLY BINDING judgment on the case. Arbitration is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper and much faster than going through a regular jury trial (so I hear.) That is why the malpractice companies require it, because they typically are paying the court costs!
