Kung Training
One of the most important groups of exercises in our system is Kung training (power training.) Martial arts that look beautiful, but lack power, are ineffective martial arts. Therefor we use many different exercises with the aid of weighted PVC pipes (traditionally it would be large bamboo), bowling balls, large rattan rings, small metal rings, and other various weighted objects. For the purposes of our training we perform functional exercises with these items, not "weight lifting."
Forms
Forms are your basic "dictionary" of techniques. If you do not understand the purpose of the movements in the forms, you will not understand the proper way to practice the attacks and defenses. Therefor it is very important that the students take time to learn the forms slowly and properly. Also, once combined with a fair amount of Kung Training, forms are an excellent tool to help the student begin learning the power control of his/her style.
Basic Drills
One of the backbones of a good foundation is being able to do the same technique the same way every time. Therefor repetition of basic strikes and defenses with proper stance and power is of extreme importance. Often we take very short sections of the various forms and practice the techniques, both right and left handed, one by one with speed, focus, and power.
Luk Sao
Very similar to Wing Chun's Chi Sao, Luk Sao is often called rolling hands. There is a short set of repeated movements performed with the forearms in constant contact with the opponent. However at any time you or your opponent can initiate an attack. The focus of this exercise is to develop forearm sensitivity to the point that one's reflexes initiate a defense and counter strike without all the hassle (and time consumption) of having to think about it. There are many sublevels of Luk Sao training, beginning with one hand drills, walking drills, freeform drills, etc.
Muk Jong
Wooden Dummy training. Our style uses several styles of wooden dummies but focuses primarily on the Yuen Ji Jong and the Ban Ji Jong. These consist of a processed tree trunk with arms and a leg of differing configurations. Depending on the configuration one must use slightly differing technique and very different defense hands and stances. For the beginners we keep a special Dit Da Jow (Iron Hit Wine) herbal rub specially designed for bruising from wooden dummy training.
Many More
The exercises listed above form the core of our basic program; However it is by no means the extent of our training regimen. SiGung Kong and Sifu Li are constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to use these ancient training exercises to help students fulfill their maximum potential.
