Project 09-11-01 was the online auction of twelve works of art on September 11th, 2002, the anniversary of the Twin Towers and Pentagon attacks. These works were twelve hand-drawn, hand-colored posters, auctioned on E-Bay for charity. Each poster was drawn by artist, Jeremy Drew, and deals with aspects of the attacks and aftermath. All of the works are 15 inches by 20 inches on acid-free paper. All money except shipping and auctioning costs was donated directly to the Twin Towers Fund. Five of the works were sold. The rest of the paintings are still for sale. Contact the artist at drewjs01@hotmail.com if you would like to purchase one of the images.
The day of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, I watched just as everyone else did. Like most people, I wanted to help out, and I went to the Red Cross and gave blood. As an artist, I also wanted to express myself and communicate how I felt. That day I was too close to the event.
It wasn't until much later that I found my voice. I was partly inspired by the work of all the great comic book creators who put out the Heroes magazine at Marvel Comics. I was also inspired by the many discussions of heroes and heroics I had with my wife and friends.
Mostly, I was inspired by the true stories of those who helped others and died on that day now almost a year ago. Many of them, Firemen, EMT's, and Police, were just doing the job they do every day. Others were lawyers, business men and women, engineers, and more who were caught up in extraordinary events and acted extraordinarilly in return.
This project is for those who are Heroes for one day or Heroes everyday. It's for those who saved others at the Twin Towers and Pentagon. And it's for the Firemen and Policemen in my own town, who risk their lives everyday as part of their job. It's for the hope that every one of us has a Hero inside waiting for an extraordinary event.
