Ever since I was a young boy, I have had a great love for comic books. I loved the heroes, the villains, and the stories. I've always known that I wanted to work in comic books, and Angelworks was the first project I started working on.
Angelworks is the story of Nathaniel, an angel who has lost his memory. Nathaniel has been exhiled to earth for crimes that he does not remember. He soon begins a journey of discovery in a universe where nothing is as he first thought. It is a story of angels and flying saucers. It is a story of good verses evil...
But that is not all that Angelworks is about.
In December of 2000, I began writing the script and drawing the first issue of the series for my senior project in college. I planned to draw an entire graphic novel of over 100 pages and a dozen or so woodcuts and etchings based on the pages. I also planned to make a multi-color lithograph for the cover. In the end, I finished the first part of Angelworks, the first fifteen pages. I also finished four etchings based on the pages. The multi-color lithograph cover became a black-and-white lithograph which I hand-painted with watercolors. I also created a hand-painted woodcut based on a promotional poster for this website. This work was all finished by December of 2001 as I finished up classes...
Three months later, the Angelworks Project went up to be seen by the general public for the first time during the Fine Arts Senior BFA Exhibition. The exhibition ran from April 1 through April 19, 2002 on the Indiana University Purdue University of Fort Wayne campas and featured the work of Vicki Flora and Matt Shaffer, two very fine sculpters. The opening, the night of April 5, 2002 was a great success...
The comic book and the prints are a symbol of what I want to do as a professional artist.
I've always felt that comic books are a combination of fine art and literature. The story which is told in each book can hold a lot of meaning, and the images can be created with a great amount of skill and care. With this project, I tried to bring wall art to comic books and comic books to wall art. I want to continue with both areas throughout my career, with a symbiosis between the two.
I am excited to see where Angelworks and my other projects go, and I hope that I can get the interest of many others.
