For many of these themes and ideas to show through, the viewer must see the comic book in its entire form, but each page holds its own excitement. The design format of comic books, page by page, can be very intriquing and have a look all their own. The artist is forever trying to engage and please the reader with the drawing and the layout of each page.
My goal has been to express this duality of the comic book format as an art form. I have created a full comic book to show the themes and stories involved. I have also used the layouts of several pages as subjects of prints to illustrate how each page can be seen as a complete work of art.
I believe that printmaking is a very beneficial medium for this project. First of all, prints and comic book have a similarity in that they both have a history of reproduction for commercial means. The line quality of etchings is also an important factor. I feel it is very similar, but not the same as, to pen and ink of comic books. In printmaking, you can also produce effects that cannot be duplicated in any other medium.
I believe I have accomplished the goals that I set when I began this project. I feel that I have brought my ideas across in a concrete way. I have made a very complex and difficult project work. I feel that I created a project which is aesthetically pleasing. I know I could continue on and expand on this project in many ways. I actually plan to do so in the future...
Six prints meant to be viewed as separate works of art. Each one is based on a work completed in a different form...
The comic book which I printed myself. I am writer, artist, and letterer. This is meant to be read and enjoyed...
