Research

M ost people think of research as either highbrow or impractical. Research is an organized method of finding out what you are going to do when you can't keep on doing what you are doing now.

--Charles Kettering

The field of special education has gone through many changes in the last few years. Educators need to learn more about specific disabilities and stay current on topics. Use these links to keep informed. As I add links to each disability, I will add the definitions to each found in the Individuals with Disabilities Act, Public Law 105-17, which was reauthorized in 1997. The final regulations were released in March of 1999. As you may know, the IDEA was reauthorized in the Spring of 2004. We will have to wait awhile for the new regulations. Research has become more important with the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Autism

Autism means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child's educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences. The term does not apply if a child's educational performance is adversely affected primarily because the child has an emotional disturbance. 34 CFR § 300.7 (c)

Those neurons are thought to allow people to imitate and empathize. But in people with autism, they don't work the way they're supposed to.

According to MSNBC, Autism has become culturally acceptable — and a ticket to a larger range of school services and accommodations.

Children exposed to high levels of testosterone before they are born are more likely to develop symptoms of autism, according to an eight-year British study of 253 children. Scientists are still uncertain whether the high levels cause autism or whether autism results in high prenatal testosterone.
