The field of special education has gone through many changes in the last few years. Educators need to learn more about specific disabilities and stay current on topics. Use these links to keep informed. As I add links to each disability, I will add the definitions to each found in the Individuals with Disabilities Act, Public Law 105-17, which was reauthorized in 1997. The final regulations were released in March of 1999. As you may know, the IDEA was reauthorized in the Spring of 2004. We will have to wait awhile for the new regulations. Research has become more important with the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act.

What is a learning disability? IDEA defines a learning disability as:

Attention Deficit Disorder falls under the "Other Health Impairment" Category. Many students eligible for special education services are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Autism means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child's educational performance. During the past several years I have served as a case manager for students with autism. I have learned a lot from parents, teachers, SLPs, and other administrators. In December 2002 I received an award from FEAT of Southern Nevada for my work on behalf of students with autism.
There is a multitude of studies going on in the area of autism.
The University of Washington launched one of the nation's first studies on preventing autism in infants and will spend the next four years exploring the benefit of intensive and early therapy on the mysterious disorder.
The study is unusual because autism research and treatment has typically focused on treating or reversing but not preventing the neurological disorder.

Helping Children With Autism is an article featuring Alecia M. Ellis, CCC-SLP. I had the privledge of working with Alecia for five years. The article gives an overview of Alecia's work in our Early Childhood demonstration classroom in the Clark County School District. The classroom uses PECs and discrete trial teaching.
