Leeds Classic
The lads at the Leeds Classic (those shorts should have a health warning attached!) For those not familiar with the Leeds Classic, it was the UK round of Cycling’s World Cup. A road race for the world’s top cyclists taking them 150 miles plus around the Pennines including 2 accents of Holme Moss and the Woodhead Pass. My self and my cycling mates (Phil Reeve, Ian Grimes and Andy Dixon) wanted to see as much of the event as possible so a plan was hatched. The green land is the white road going through Holme woods The best action and atmosphere was going to be on Holme Moss, there was an official car park at the bottom of the hill, but there'd be no chance of making it out of that in time to go see the race elsewhere. Living and cycling around the area we knew there was a green lane coming out half way up Holme Moss. We decided to take the Landy up this lane to come out on the route, watch the 2 accents then head off back down the lane to make it across to the other side of the loop to see the riders come off the top of the Wood Head Pass. We could then head off to see the finish in Leeds. The plan worked a treat, people had driven up the main road at the crack off dawn to get parked before the road was closed, whereas we bumped our way up the green lane and parked right on the course with just a short wait for the action to start. On top of my Landy I had a big roof rack with a platform on. This made it easy to load the roof with bikes etc… but now it made the perfect grandstand seat! As soon as the riders had passed we headed back down the green lane to make it across to the other side of the loop to see the riders at come off the Wood Head Pass and head down towards Huddersfield. Not wanting to waste much time it was full steam ahead on the dusty track… much to the disgust of a mountain biker we pebble dashed…oops! As the track flattened out on the last stretch, before we got back to tarmac, Phil and Andy decided that my Landy would be good for roof surfing… So fueled by the alcohol they'd consumed watching the race they got out the back door, up the ladder and onto the platform on the roof. Once up there I think the found it a little trickier than anticipated, with the Landy pitching about beneath them… it wasn't long before they came down, covered it bruises… probably the fact I steered towards the over hanging tree put them off a bit too. Andy Dixon was as mad as a fish at times, especially when he had a drink or too in him… on the M1 heading into Leeds later that day he decided that now was a good time to have another go at that roof surfing… 70mph on the M1 he opened the back door and made for the rear ladder. Ian and Phil had both had a few drinks but knew this wasn't funny and wasn't clever and quickly hauled him back inside…what an ar$e!
