My First Landy

90 Turbo Diesel County Station Wagon

My first Landy, on Ringinlow, Sheffield

I had my first proper job after I graduated so now I wanted to upgrade the transport from the 1.3 Metro. Anything vaguely sporty cost an arm and a leg to anyone under the age of 25 so a Landy looked like a good alternative. Plenty of street cred (if your friends are sheep), loads of space to transport mine and my mates bikes around. There was also the added bonus of them not being quick so would help keep the points off my license.

Mum & Dad with the Turbo 90 CSW

After some hunting I came across a mint condition 1989 90 Turbo Diesel County Station Wagon at Jake Wright’s in Burley-in-Wharfedale. It was high on miles but not a mark on it. I replaced all the suspension bushes on it and then it drove like new.

The Turbo Diesel Land Rover engine was not the greatest of power plants, even in its day. It was a development of the earlier 2.25 normally aspirated engine. It wasn’t particularly powerful (but better than the 2.5 NA engine), had cooling issues, and tended to suffer from smoking as the mileage rose. But for non-motorway use if it was looked after it was great.
