WRITING

Forms of Writing: |
Students will have
the opportunity to practice a variety of writing forms. We will write
narratives, expository paragraphs and essays, descriptive paragraphs and
essays, persuasive paragraphs and essays, reports, opinions. letters, directions,
and a variety of journals. We use the "writing process" in the context
of a writing workshop to develop our writing. Student work is evaluated
using a variety of rubrics, including the NH
State Writing Rubric
. |
Writing Mechanics: |
Skills in grammar,
spelling, usage, punctuation, and the writing conventions are taught through
the writing workshop, and in skill classes. We focus our instruction on
writing complete sentences (recognizing and fixing fragments and run-ons),
parts of speech, using punctuation correctly, and developing complete paragraphs
into longer essays. The emphasis is on continuous improvement in
student writing. |
Writing Grade: |
Writing process -35% Students are graded on their effort and application
of the writing process. Do they make a legitimate attempt at planning,
drafting, revising, and editing their work as they bring a piece to final
form? Are they staying on task during writing workshop by working on our
area of focus? Are students attempting to make their writing better? |
Classroom activities
and homework - 40% Students will be graded on individual class participation,
group activities and/or activity sheets used in the classroom or assigned
as homework. |
Portfolio pieces
- 25% Final drafts of seleccted writing will be graded according
to established rubrics. |
