This month's book project: NEWBERY book
DUE DATE:  November 22, 2002
.CAt
Choose a book that has won a Newbery medal or Newbery Honor medal .  Check to see if it has a Reading Counts quiz and have the book approved by Mrs. Weissman by October 21st.

This month's project has TWO parts:
  • A character description POSTER
  • A character description PARAGRAPH
HOW TO CREATE THE POSTER:
First:  You will be describing the main character in your book.   Choose 3 or more of the categories listed below.  As you read your book, find descriptions from your book about the main character that reveal information about the categories you've chosen.  Use sticky notes or bookmarks to mark those passages.  You will copy these descriptions exactly from your book onto your poster.  You may use more than one description under each category but you must find descriptions for at least 3 categories.
Categories:
  • The main character's personality
  • The main character's ambitions, hopes, dreams or goals
  • The main character's physical appearance
  • His or her relationships with others
  • His or her biggest problems
  • His or her worries or fears, likes or dislikes
Second:  Using posterboard no larger than 18"x24", create a picture of your main character.   Around the edges of your illustration, write the headings for the 3 or more categories you've chosen.  Under each category heading, copy exactly the description you found in your book.  Put quotation marks around this description, and write the page number that the description is found on.    It's important to plan ahead so that you will have room to write your descriptions under your category headings.
HOW TO DO THE PARAGRAPH:
Your paragraph will be a summary of the information on your poster.  This time, however, you will USE YOUR OWN WORDS to describe your character.  You may include new information that's not on your poster.  Remember that you need a topic sentence, at least 3 well-supported details, and a concluding sentence.  Write or type your paragraph neatly.
